With the light switch turned on, measure to see if there is any voltage between the negative terminal on the battery and the frame. Should be zero.

I have a TCD 29 with 1400 hours. I also have a kerosene tank w/ about 50 gallons that is left over from our Monitor heater that croaked after 40 years and was replaced w/ propane. Can I use it in the tractor, either straight or as a diesel mix without damage? Thanks.

If you can get someone to help you, measure the voltage between the big stud on the starter, and a nearby ground. Have the other person try to start. If the voltage doesn't go down, check the voltage at the small stud where the solenoid gets its current to close. If it gets voltage to close but...

If you can get a second person to help, have them measure the voltage at the starter when you try to crank it. I also agree you shouldn't crank so long, it can ruin the starter and other parts.
