    Retaining walls and patio

Well let's be honest, most of this has been for aesthetic reasons only. But the driveway had large cracks and sections were sunken and raised, creating a trip hazard. The weather here allows for less structurally sound building methods, compared to other areas. The way I see it, the stairs...

I should have taken photos of the roots that were growing under the driveway. The source of the cracks was obvious.

Soil never freezes here and we get minimal rain. It's a very mild climate. The usual base here is compacted dirt although some like to use crushed rock, it's not really necessary.

I'm thinking it will also be less likely to crack since the sections will be smaller.

This is the type of form work we are planning for the driveway. Probably nine six foot sections. Should be relatively simple.

One of the sections had a 2x6 doubled up that nobody remembered to remove so the step has a funky 2"x8" strip of concrete that didn't get broomed. I wasn't there for that part.;)

I tried to find form oil but couldn't so I made some with a 30/70 mix of motor oil and diesel. Let's see if it helps the forms pop off tomorrow.

Uneventful pour... which is a good thing I guess. Ordered 7 yards, used about 6.5. 480 sq ft. $1,187 for concrete, $385 for pumping, $800 for finishers.

    Retaining walls and patio

Forms are all set for the concrete pour tomorrow. These are not normal stairs. They are floating sections that have a cantilever overhang to give them the appearance of floating. Also they are spaced out by the width of the 2x6 form since that's the look my brother wanted. There are other ways...

    Retaining walls and patio

I have new respect for the amount of work that goes into concrete forms and getting everything level and straight. The photos here show the walkway which is 28 separate rectangles with 6" gap between each. The forms for a regular walkway would be far, far easier. Decided to hire a finishing...

The Top 5 Tractor Channels on YouTube

I liken it to watching car shows where they are driving exotic cars through Europe or Asia... most of us will never get that opportunity but it's fun to watch. I'm not seeing anything in these videos that tell people to go into debt to buy $150k worth of equipment to maintain their property...

Got to the point of running out of blocks and the next delivery is coming on Monday so I'm done with the dust bowl for a while. I have to say that the "little" Bobcat T110 impressed me. It packs the typical skid steer power but with better maneuverability thanks to a 48" width. Also I had a...

    Retaining walls and patio

Finally something exciting to report. We were (well I was) backfilling the second tier with the bobcat and the ground was loose and the course of blocks below was not filled with crush rock yet and apparently I bumped the wall with the track and knocked the entrie thing out of alignment. So that...
