Mixing used oil with diesel in the tractor.

"you would think that the tankers arriving there in Valdez - could come loaded with refined petroleum products. They could off-load these products and then take on crude oil." The tankers come in with sea water in them for ballast. We actually have a refinery that makes low sulfur diesel, jet...

Mixing used oil with diesel in the tractor.

That's what I thought. I've heard of it. Just trying to brainstorm ideas to cut costs. Our heating oil has tripled just by itself. In the winter the community's electricity is powered by diesel, so the electric bills are going to be tripled too this winter if not 4X's.

Mixing used oil with diesel in the tractor.

Anyone mixing used oil in with their diesel to cut the cost? I have old hydraulic and motor oil that I can filter and maybe mix in a quart per five gallons of diesel. We went to $6.40 a gallon today and if I project out the increases to winter plowing season, it looks like I might be shoveling...

Getting ripped off at the pump

I made the mistake of NOT stopping the other day. Sign said $4.44 for diesel. Someone hit the 4 instead of the $5.44 it should have been.

    Members in their 70s?

71 this year. Not much I still can't do. Vitamin D, daily. Get away from the TV. Remember that if your retired that the job will be there tomorrow too. You don't have to accomplish everything at once. Pace yourself. Exercise!! Most of my meat is harvested by myself. Moose, bear, hares, shrimp...

    Seafoam for real?

I have a 24' Sea Sport with a 454 for the ocean that is on the water 6 months a year. I always add Sea Foam to the tanks on every other fill up. It always starts. A couple ounces in the chain saws, brush cutter, ATV, snowmachine, and everything else gets it. It is the one additive that I use...

Another roof ? How do I get lichens off roof?

Up here in Alaska moss is the problem. There is a product called Moss Out that may work on that too. It contains a large amount of Iron.

Would a zero turn be faster than a B2601?

Why not add a towable gang mower. An 8' one would probably cut down the time. My uncle used one years ago on his 5 acres. Should be a lot less than buying a $6000 mower.

    High fuel cost and wood

Received my monthly fuel oil bill yesterday. $4.57 a gallon for heating oil. Diesel in $5.56.

How far and high can I throw snow?

Aware of that! Diesel is $4.50 a gallon and our electric bills have doubled up here. Some of the native villages are at more than $10 a gallon.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Next issue will be can I find one in Alaska with all the shortages.

How far and high can I throw snow?

Jims1025 that sounds good for the optimal blowing stuff. If I push everything back and then back into it, I might be able to go higher with the snow stacking.

How far and high can I throw snow?

Main drive is 100 yards by 25' wide. But the area I push into is about 300' x 100'. Then a little parking area about 30' x 30'. I don't need that much plowed area, but I have lost about 50% of the push area stacking snow so far.

How far and high can I throw snow?

I am just plain running out of room to put snow. We've had about 250" so far, still about 80" below our normal. I am stacking it everywhere. I have Kubota B2601 with 24-26 h.p. and am thinking of a 3-point rear mounted blower. 50" probably. There are times that the blower will be useless...

    Heating Budget

Hydro probably won't come back online until April. Everything is frozen. It just warmed up to the 20's this week. We are lucky to have hydro part of the year. In the villages up on the Bering coast, they are all diesel generators. You can bet they are paying $8+ for fuel of any kind. Yea...

    Heating Budget

I have a pellet stove coming and am replacing the wood stove. 120-pound hopper and 3 day burn time is a plus. Also at 70, the firewood is getting heavier. I am making a shelf/pallet "quick attack" for the tractor to haul bags of pellets to the porch. That way I can set 20 bags at a time on...

    Cable chains for tractor tires?

I'm down in Valdez and my dealer installed 3" spacers on my Kubota for chain clearance. The chains that Citydude posted will work if you can get them. I tried chains for about a week and removed them. It felt like I was driving on an extension ladder. I switched to screw in studs...

    Kubota fuel requirements.

I had a friend move to Fairbanks. Her first year she went to fuel up her husbands truck. The fuel hose snapped in half at -50 and she was left standing there with both halves. Our coldest temps might get to zero but rarely. Our average snow is 325" a year. Mostly it hovers 20-30's but I still...

    Kubota fuel requirements.

We do have bulk fueling here for certain things. Petro Star loads tankers of fuel (Jet and aircraft) for the military bases and sent out to be processed for gasoline. No private sales. We do have a refinery that makes LS, Jet and heating oil. Another place loads barges for outgoing and brining...

    Kubota fuel requirements.

Low sulfur is around $3.60 a gallon. Kerosene is around $7.00 No dye up here in the fuel. Haven't had a heating oil bill in months. There are only three fuel station in town so having them drive to my place isn't practical. And yes, being taxed by the mile is a possibility in the future for...

    Kubota fuel requirements.

My new 2601 manual says to use Low Sulfur Diesel only. No one dyes any fuel up here or even checks. Would there be any harm in using a 50/50 mix of winter home heating oil and LS mixed in a 55 gallon drum? Justification is it is easier to have the fuel truck driver fill the barrel than me...

What additives do you use in your fuel and engines?

I used to use Lucas Engine treatment but in the boat but the fuel coming out of the vents during fuel-up was green. I emailed Lucas and asked if that was supposed to happen and they never responded. I latter had to take the boat to an excellent outboard marine mechanic and he asked me also; Why...

    PINE logs anyone?

Where I live in Alaska we burn Sitka Spruce, Hemlock or Cottonwood. Up North they have birch and that is it. The mill sounds like a great idea.

    finish nail puller deluxe.

Every 6th nail is designed to be imperfect at manufacture to bend in different directions. The tool manufactures pay for this so that "we" will have to buy more than one tool to remove them. It is simple economics.

    finish nail puller deluxe.

Taught Wood Shop for 25 years. I always taught to kids to pull the finish nails through to lessen damage on the good face of the board. Used vice grips, the rounded edge and put a thin scrap piece in between. Almost always worked great.

kUBOTA Lock lever for quick connect attachments

As I moved 5" of winter wonder today I had a chance to look at mine. Brainstorming here: 1. Drill the same holes and put a spring between the two holes that you can pull...

    Prostate cancer

    Prostate cancer

I had it back in 2012. Gleason 8+ or so. We caught it early which is a plus. I did a tremendous amount of research. In town, I found three others that had had it and talked to them too. What is important to remember is that you are different than everyone else. Everyone's cancer is slightly...

    B2601 vs kioti ck2610

I can't compare my 2601 to anything else but I love the machine. It clears about 300'x25' and another area that is about 75'x'100'. we have only had 225" of snow this year so not a real test but it has done well.

Best firearm for home protection? I realize a lot is personal choice involved?

A .44 Magnum if you handload is quite a versatile firearm. 200 grain .44 Special load for personal defense. 200 grain HP .44 Special deer round. 129 grain muzzle loading ball for rabbits and grouse. Squirrels hate them too. Bird shot round #6 I believe. You have to be close. 240 grain hard cast...

Best firearm for home protection? I realize a lot is personal choice involved?

I have an 870 near the front door with 600 grain Dixie hard cast slugs. About 3600 foot pounds of energy. But where I live, a guy on meth is unlikely. But a brown bear is. Otherwise my carry arm is a Kimber 1911 in .45 ACP or a S&W 629 in .44 mag. For people, .44 Special rounds are...

    Snow Equipment Owning/Operating Kubota

Tires are R4's. Because the machine is a tractor/loader and I have no rear attachments, I have a Kubota factory ballast box on the rear with 500# or gravel in it. I have tossed around the idea of a blower but a place, to blow to, is limited and in one area I'd have to blow it twice to get it moved.

    Snow Equipment Owning/Operating Kubota

My dealer said I needed 3" spacers for rear chains on my B-2601. I have run two different types of chains and find them way too rough on my back with the bouncing. So I switched to Kold Kutter screw in studs. Unless I am pushing up hill on a 10% slope, the wet stuff the State plow pushes in, I...

What was your first Kubota and why?

B2601 with hydrostatic transmission, loader, ballast box and quick attach plow. The main reason is in front of the tractor in the pic. Reaching 70 years with four back operations. Kold Kutter screw in studs for R4 tires

I just bought some studs - 1" x #12 screw from Kold Kutter. They are 1" from tip to shoulder. A quick look makes me think they are too long. Tires are new. They were the shortest #12's I found. Am I going to hurt my tires with 1" screw in studs at the high point of the thread in the...
