Battery based vehicles of today and tomorrow pt 2

No doubt there are use cases out there where an EV is still superior to ICE vehicles. Unfortunately there are more uses cases where they arent. As I have stated before, everything about an EV is superior to ICE vehicles except the power source. Once we get that figured out there really is no...

Battery based vehicles of today and tomorrow pt 2

A few thoughts. EV batteries are 60-100kwh in many cases. The Power wall will give you a pittance of a charge. Second, charge when the Sun is shining is a challenge for anyone that is away from home all day (work, etc). Once it hits 5pm ish there is little solar gain left.

Battery based vehicles of today and tomorrow pt 2

Lithium batteries may be cheaper, but they are not very energy dense. In my opinion they remain a terrible option as a power source for vehicular travel. The only reason they are being used today is because the are the best option given current technology.

I said it would be a few decades before the battery tech is there, which is generous. To me a few decades is your "tomorrow." The first battery (partly) powered vehicle was the Prius, produced in 2000. That was 23 years ago. Lithium batteries hit mainstream vehicles in 2010. We have had no...

I wonder how much a solar setup would cost to L2 charge an EV? Remember you would need it to charge in the evening and on rainy days. I can tell you my offgrid solar setup was $50k and there is no chance I could pump 50kw into a vehicle to charge it and keep the house running.

Battery based vehicles of today and tomorrow pt 2

Yes but as the article mentions lots of folks are paying cash because they cant afford to finance…so they are spending around $4000 just to get something to drive. Today EV batteries cost 3 times that, much less a car to go with it. I would not expect that turnaround to happen for another few...

https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/21/africa/west-africa-benin-used-cars-climate-intl/index.html This is irony for ya. When someone in the US buys an EV and trades in their gas vehicle, some that cant be resold in the US are stripped of their emissions equipment (cat converters, etc) and sold to...

I buy 5 gal premix, lasts much longer than anything at the pump (no ethanol) and for me thats a years worth of fuel in my saws. The RTV is a work machine (I have X1100C). It isnt made for fun. I have friends up here in the mountains that have torn up Polaris and sporty "utility" vehicles with a bunch of plastic parts on them. They all want my machine for real work. So thats the trade off. The RTV diesel is pretty...

As I have mentioned before: with EVs everything about the vehicle is superior to ICE except for the power source. Electric motors per joule are more efficient than ICE. However the battery tech really needs to mature for mainstream adoption. Higher energy density, cheaper, lighter.

317 watt/hours per mile is not bad if you have a 100,000 watt/hour battery. That is 315 miles of range. This is a pretty common number in today's longer range EVs.

    LS?

What do you consider a heavy bale? A tractor that weighs 2800lbs is going to have a hard time with a large round. If you arent moving them regularly long and uneven distances you might be fine with appropriate ballast. The problem with large rounds is how far they stick out and change center...

7 years 0% down IS NOT 0% interest. If you do the math you are paying an extra $6500 over that $18k sticker just for financing (if the payment is $297/month for 7 years). That's a complete rip off in my book.

Both sustained top speed and torque on the motor (acceleration/towing) heavily drain energy. I don't think we can sell slower speeds until these vehicles drive themselves. Just tell it where to go and take a nap. Right now it will be hard enough to sell EVs to the masses due to extra cost...

Thats barely 1 a day. Just use pallet forks In my opinion…unless you have really uneven ground to work with. If you already have pallet forks…give it a try for a year. Then you will know if you need a spear or not.

I ask because unless you are moving multiple bales a day or have really uneven ground pallet forks (4 ft length) are just fine. I moved 50 or so bales in no time with pallet forks a couple of years ago. You get good at it....and one less attachment to deal with.
