    New twist on scams?

Got a call the other day - Credit card type touting their card. I listened long enough to realize it might be a scam. The "If you no longer want to get these calls, click 4". Uhuh suurree. Guess the "call this number" one isn't working to well any more.

    Wonderful day!

Second day out of the deep freeze, no wind rain, temp about 40. 2 hours on the woodpile!!! Other than handling wet wood and wading in puddles it was great to be out of the house again.

    Snowblower help

I'm in the market for a new snowblower. I have an 11 hp poulan but it has that 'disc drive' - a cheap way to make a non-working tranny. Every time I get into tough going I have to push to help it as the disc-drive starts slipping. I found that Honda has a hydro drive but it is in the $2500...

    Cabin fever

Had a bad case of it this morning. Too muddy to split wood which is what I like to do every morning to get the blood woke up. Yanked the MS361 out, refueled it (had already run it dry for the winter) and attacked my pile of limbwood waiting to be cut up: I quit after taking the picture as I...

    Where's the birds?

I put up my feeders a couple weeks ago. Realized shortly that there is no activity at them and now I can't recall seeing _any_ bird anywhere for a long time. Normal here is feeders go up and a day later there is a crowd around them. I talked to SIL in Kamloops BC yesterday. She said she had...

What's up with the arborist site?

I was on arboristsite.com at about midnight when it kicked me out. Been trying off and on since but IE insists that URL does not exist. I even went to the town library thinking it was either my 'puter or my service provider. Got the same response on their machines. Harry K

    Firewooding aids

After finally breaking down and buying a "hookeroon" (log rite) a few years ago I decided climbing up in the truck bed to unload stuff that was out of reach was a nuisance. Buit myself a 7' hookeroon: 8' closet pole cut to 7 (should have been a bit longer). Compression fitting (Dressler...

    Hydraulic pump - positive displacement?

In a discussion of a log splitter problem a guy is complaining that the new motor is the problem with lack of pressure. I say that the motor has zip to do with pressure as long as the motor is not stalling and that his problem is in the pump/hydro system. Guy 2 insists that the proper rpm is...

    Cut-off guides for firewood

Over the years I have tried every method of marking logs for cutting that I have heard of. Mark the whole log and start cutting? Nope. Come to a crook, crotch, limb, etc and you have to make an adjustment - throws all subsequent marks off. Eyeball? Nope. Doesn't work for me. On big stuff...

    Sawbuck for limb wood

Ibuilt this years ago,put it away and got it out again last year. I hated cutting up stuff smallenough not to need splitting, loading it, unloading it. Now I cut the limbs/small stuff to 8' or less and do the processing at home. Loaded up: Cut up: Folds flat when done: I sized it...

    When good plans go ...

Tree had a slight lean straight away from the camera and was a bit weight loaded to the right. Diameter right at 20" at the falling cuts - that was about chest high due to the co-dominant stem that was there prior. My brush pile is direct to left. Figured I could undercut aimed at the brush...

    Water level

Apologies if this has been posted here before. I thought of adding it to the "will it take off" thread but that is getting a bit long. A man is on a boat in a small pond. There is a concret block in the boat. He rows out to the middle and drops the block overboard. Does the pond water level...

    Practice pays off! (long)

I have always driven manual transmission PUs. Current is a 1989 F150 for firewood hauling (and other chores). I loaded up this morning to go cut wood. Got about 10 miles from home on a back road, met stop sign, went to shift to 3rd (who stops on such roads?), 'snap' and clutch falls to the...

    Amount of wood per cord?

No, not a question of how many cubic feet, that is 128. Way back when (don't ask) after retiring from the militgary, I bought this place and started burning wood because I liked it and grew up doing it. I did a lot of reading and recall seeing a statement in a book somewhere that you get...

    Investment advice

If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. With Enron, you would have $16.50 of the original $1,000.00. With Worldcom, you would have less than $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser (the beer, not the stock) one year ago...
