It turns out that Yanmar has seen this in at least one other machine. It cleaned up easily with solvent, with no pitting on the spring. I greased it and it seems to be fine. The upper valve had no issue whatsoever. Also, Yanmar is fantastic as far as support goes.

There is a circle on the side control panel for an unavailable option. From the symbol this must control a mid or front PTO that Europeans get!
