Well I think I got the KKII broke in today. Spent the afternoon tilling gardens around town. The KK worked great!! Nice to have a heavier tiller and the depth was good to. All of the folks that I tilled for were impressed and glad they didn't have to till them by hand!

Hey, that's great. I haven't even put mine together yet, maybe today or tomorrow. I don't think I'll have any sidejobs, but maybe someone will see me using it and decide to start a garden...

Always great to hear success stories!
My Kubota L4400 was delivered yesterday and I uncrated the KKII 5-footer.
(Got pics of the tractor, but once I got the tiller on, I was just a tillin' fool the remainder of the day!) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Brett,

On the gardens that had been plowed I was tilling 2 to three inched above the bottom of the tiller. I tilled three new garden spots for people. I usually do 3 passes on these and by the third pass I am getting a good 6 to 8 inches. If you do any for people I always reccomend fall plowing. It makes all the difference in the world and most of the time you only have to make one pass witht the tiller....an man does it look good! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

OK, so on virgin ground with the skid shoes all the way up, it takes three passes to get about 8" deep? Is that good/normal, soil dependent? If you travelled slower would it get deeper in less passes? Man I got to get mine hooked up and play with it.

Prove it! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Where's the pics?

In sod and three pases I was getting eight inches deep. This was traveling slow and letting the tiller dig. I forgot to take the camera with me on the tilling jobs! I'll have to remember it on the next one. I did four today and a some yard repair and a re-seed job too....the KKII is getting a work out!

Please don't be offended, but that seems very unimpressive to me. I don't have a tiller yet, but am pretty close to the purchase of a 6' KK unit, and was expecting much better performance. I can't afford to go back over ground.

What size tiller do you have and what's the tractor HP? Mine is 40 hp, and I was hoping to till about 8-9" with one pass in non-plowed grass/sod.

You may have to try tilling without the skids installed to get that kinda depth on the 1st pass.

If you want good loose, usable finish, you will have to do more passes. At what you are wanting, quick in and deep, you are not going to have a very fine finish, lots of clumping etc. I usually go 2 passes, first about 3 inches then down to 4 to 6 and slow ground speed, full throttle.

bx23 so 18hp at the pto, and a 48" KK, works real well

I dont think what you want is possible with any brand tiller unless you plow first.

Dany is right. Any of these tillers will till in the first pass. I can sit still and go as deep as I want and just have a mess with clumps and uneven soil. Which will require extra time for you or the customer to deal with.

I find it actually quicker to make two or three passes at an even speed and by the second or third pass the soil looks almost like powder and the ground is level.

With that large of a tractor and a 6' tiller time should not be an issue.

dj,

No offence taken by any means. If you have never operated a tiller it is just like any kind of soil engagement equipment. It takes a few passes to get the kind of results needed to plant. I don't know of any implement that will deliver the kind of results needed in just one pass, I'd sure like to see it if there is one. The KK is designed to till 6-8" deep. If the garden is plowed prior to tilling then you can achieve the desired results in one pass....I usually do two because I belive in giving people a little extra for their money and the ground is...well beautifully tilled.

If you ever watched a farmer unless they're doing no till they work the ground a few times before planting.....were talking acres now!
