Might be as simple as low fluid, but I thought I would throw this out to you gurus before I start troubleshooting - I have been under the weather recuperating from surgery and I need to get on it fast when I am again mobile.

I have a 1700 that doesn't hold its hydraulics well for elevated heavy implements (tank sprayer, gannon) on the 3 point. After running for like an hour (hot) I get some up and down shaking on the hitch. I think the fluid is OK (this is the first thing I will check) but I was hoping to see if there were some other checks I could make initially as well.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to TBN Blue.

I don't think your issue is low fluid which can be easily checked by inspecting the dip stick for hyd fluid. Do you know where the dipstick is and have you ever checked it? Losing hyd specially with heavy load is almost always some leakage internally (more likely) or externally (by inspection). internal leakage can be on several locations with most likely location to be hyd lift piston singular oil seal. I have a thread that went thru the whole thing with many pics. Read them and if you have questions please ask and we'll sure help you to solve your problem. Be warned that discussion was detailed.

JC,

PS. You would not be our old friend "old1710" by any chance, would ya?:D

Yep, that's me - changed the name to avoid tractor model confusion. :)

All the fluids are checked and the simple maint has been done regularly - why I will be surprised if its a leak, although these can happen at any time. The thing has been chugging along for a couple years since I got it and I hoped it would do so forever.

The other fixes were just a sidelight. Front tire had a hole I could stick my thumb in - the AZ sun and UV are murder on rubber - and the water pump is a straight forward failure and easily addressed. All at once no fun though.

I found all your posts and pics, so we have a good start looking at this one.

Thanks.

Okay,

I ain't a betting man,but I bet ya :D:D you need a $8 nylon lift piston seal that takes tops 1 hr to replace. Post back with issues.

Thanks in advance.

I get a similar situation, but only when the 3pt lever is fully rearward, so I've learned not to put the lever in that position.

I know this doesn't help your problem but thought I would relate it to you anyway.

Do you know there is an adjustment for that? I don't have the fix in front of me, but I bet someone else can walk you through the adjustment procedure.
Your up travel goes too far and it is simple to correct.

Hope you are right, Ray.

If its not the most simple adjustment, I'm leaning toward the piston seal, because of the age and the fact it drops when the engine cuts off.

I need to check that big old filter too, if just on general principals.

There is an adjustable stop thumb screw thing, but my lever will go past it a little.

Mine does that as well overnight, doesn't bother me to much, but you do have to be careful when you start up, first it puts extra strain on the starting circuit if you have a heavy implement attached, but also if the arms dropped down close to other equipment, you could have trouble if an arm catches something on the way up. I almost knocked my stowed JD back hoe over in the shed.

Follow JC's repair thread if you want to correct that, for me I can live with it since this is a back up machine, not my primary utility tractor.

Sorry, Oldford1700, there is no adjustment for your problem. You will need a new piston seal. But it is something you can do yourself with instructions from JC. The adjustment fix was for the poster just above mine JB4310. His problem is different from yours. Sorry if I confused everyone. Ray

JB, you need a new piston seal as well after reading your last post about dropping over night. If you are going to live with it, it will only get worse, especially when it is cold weather. However for now, get into the habit of lowering the 3 point when parking overnight. Then when you start up in the morning the 3 point will not lift while you are starting the tractor. After it is running and up to speed and temp you can then raise the 3 point before moving the tractor. Thaat way you can watch the upward travel and make sure it doesn't hit anything.
