Last winter my 4wd went out of the front left side of my 2000bd. I tore it apart and found that the pinion gear (#36) and the front gear drive looked wore (#52 ) They don't really look all that bad but i am guessing these tractors were not build with a very tight tolerance to begin with, so a little wear and you could have some slipping going on. The Gear drive is the worst and some of the teeth are juat a bit flat instead of pointed.
What I am getting at is, will a slightly wore gear make the left side quit working? I would say if these gears were inter meshed completley they should still work fine but I am not sure if they are meshed all they way when they are new... ( kinda hard to explain what I mean just by typing )

If you can post a picture of the pieces it might help us to give proper advice. Probably if the gears are visibly worn they need to be replaced. I recently replaced some bearings and the center shaft in the front drive of my 1510D and although it is different assembly than yours the principles are the same.

Like all gear combinations the amount of free movement needs to be closely checked and set up according to the tolerances of the manufacturer. In some situations this requires alot of assemble/disassemble/reassemble and if someone gets impatient it gets put together too sloppy. If someone does not pay close attention to the backlash it will lead to premature failure of the parts. Properly adjusted the gears will last a very long time. If they are set too sloppy they will last only a relatively short time.

I have my 2000bd left knuckle broke down right now to replace the knuckle seal. While I"m at it, I'm replacing the rest of the seals so I don't have to take it apart anytime soon....hopefully.

Anyway, I may measure and take some pics of mine if you want to compare.
hopefully I can get it back together, lol.
