Kubota L4240HSTC,1984 JD 750,Troy Bilt Horse tiller
I'm looking at a 2010 Kubota L4240 HSTC with fel this weekend. It has 630 hours and is in pretty clean shape. Did these tractors have the problematic emissions control on them? He is asking $25,000. for it. Is that a fair price? We average 200" of snow where I live and a cab tractor sure would be nice. I appreciate any advice or info anyone can provide.

The L--40 were the last series of Kubota Grand L tractors with relatively simple Tier III emission controls. Some are willing a pay a premium in used tractors for this simplicity. Grand Ls are known for quality build. 630 hours of course is very low hours for a diesel engine. With proper maintenance and prudent operation the L4240 you are considering should go 12,000 hours before requiring an engine overhaul.

The current L--60 series of Kubota Grand L tractors have the strict Tier IV emission controls, which are more complex and raised the price of the L--60 series $3,000 to $5,000 each. However, you do get clean exhaust and an increase of 2-4 horsepower in engine output.

Cabbed tractors are much more expensive than open station tractors. New York will have very different tractor pricing from Florida, so I cannot comment directly on the price. However, I would say $25,000 for a cabbed L4240 with low hours seems like a value price to me.

JD750 was my first tractor. A Kubota Grand L will keep a smile on your face.:)

What Jeff said... I have a L4060 hstc. The successor to that you are looking at. Good all around machine. Plenty of power unless you are at Colorado altitude & doing a lot of roading or running a BIG mower. My 7' flail will tax things & so will hills here in the land of no Oxygen, but not enough to make me really wish I'd bought the next HP range up.

That tractor can have a mid PTO added to it pretty easily (if it doesn't have one). Kubota makes a front mount snow blower (I have one) for it that works well. If you do buy it and plan on keeping it for any length of time I would seriously think about investing the extra money to get the front mount and never look back (pun intended) unless you have a sort straight driveway.

I purchased a L4240 HSTC in Jan.of 2009.Use it for snow removal (FEL mounted 8' plow),have a thumb on the bucket,do all my food plot and brush removal with no problems.Mine has about 1200 hrs.currently.
The 853 loader is powerfull;I run a six ft.bush-hog,two bottom dirt plows, tiller ect. with no problems.
The Grand L's added features are really nice.
I paid about $36,000 for tractor and FEL when purchased new;included a third function, quick attach heavy duty bucket.

From my experience with open station Kubota's and a snow plow, including one Grand L, if it looks good, runs good, and meets your needs, get it. You will come to smile when think about your "new" tractor and it's features and comfort. It will make snow removal almost a pleasure.

If I could, I would love a cab in the winter, but otherwise it would be in the way.

Front blowers are EXPENSIVE. And the mounting stuff costs more than the blower. Adding the front PTO (to a grand, not an option on the economy) will be pretty insignificant compared to the other parts.

Personally I go with a SSQA plow up front & a 3pt blower in the rear. The plow is a lot faster than the blower. Around here the plow does 75% or more of the job. I turn around & use the blower if I need to cleanup a windrow or run into the occasional drift or deep now I can't plow. Your weather conditions may or may not be conducive to this though.
