I have a '12 Ram 2500 Cummins 4X4 Laramie package. It has 17" aluminum wheels with 265/70-17 Firestone tires rated at 3190 pounds. I haul a slide in camper and with the camper I'm under the both front and rear GAWR and even more so under the max load rating of the tires but I'd still like a little more safety margin. Looking at Nitto dura grappler tires in 285/70-17 which have a max load rating of over 3700 pounds. Only problem, I can't find what the max load rating of the OE wheels is supposed to be. Can anyone help. I would rather not have to buy new wheels but there is no advantage to upgrading the tires if the wheels would still be a weak link.

I'd think if you took half of you heaviest axle rating, they would be rated for at least that, but probably more. I don't know if you will find a definite answer, but maybe.

I'm sure that like you said they are rated for at least half the axle rating each like you said but I'm looking at tires that will have more capacity.

Sticking with the factory wheel will be a safe bet. Most aftermarket wheels are not hub centric. All the pressure of curb weight and turning is on the lugs if the wheel are not hub centric.

You can stick a tire on that is rated at 10,000 lbs each and you are still rated at your axle capacity. I don't know this for sure, but the axle capacity is what limits what the truck will haul, not what the tire or wheel is rated for.

I have an 07 and have hauled 7 tons in my dump trailer + the trailer weight (what ever that is) I haven't had a wheel failure yet. I think you'll be safe with your slide in camper

Your rear axle is the same that is in my 07, if I remember right in a non dialog configuration it has an axle rating of a little ver 9,000 lbs. I would say the wheels are rated at least 4,000 lbs.
