I have a 70 something model 2040 with a JD 145 front end loader. I need to remove the starter, it's dragging real bad. I can't figure out how to remove it. I can get to the top bolt easy but the bottom one is a real bugger. Does the front end loader have to be removed to get to it?

I have the 830 which is the same tractor, previous generation.

I also have the same loader and had to remove the starter.

I removed the loader, then the right side mount and 'plate'. Not sure what it's called. Using another tractor with a loader and chain hoist made it easier to remove the loader mount.

Then I could access the starter. Sounds hard but it's just heavy parts with large bolts. My loader is a quick attach tho.

Hope this helps.

The "plate" behind the loader mount is called a side frame.

Right, side plate.

I actually didn't remove it to access the starter.

The lower bolt on the starter can be reached w/o removing the side plate. It is tight though.
