Hi all, my old John deere 2040s is leaking oil out the connection between the link arms and the diff housing. My local (400kms away) dealer was nice enough to sell me the seals but I'm buggered if I cam get em out.

I can get the link arms off and the shaft to slide out either side but I can see no way of getting the old seal out and new one in... I got the operators manual from John deere but that doesn't offer much insight. I'd hate to have to drive back to the dealer and ask him what the heck to do. Any insights would be great.

I've never known any link arms to have a connection to the tractor by any means other than a mechanical pivot. I don't understand why there would be a seal there. Are you sure it's not leaking at that rear housing? And on a side note, it looks like the PTO shaft seal is leaking as well.

Make sure applicable fluids are drained before removing any seals.

To remove a seal that is flush to a housing:
1. Drill a small hole in the seal--About 7/64" or so.
2. Install a #6 sheet metal screw into your slide hammer.
3. Screw the slide hammer into the seal where you just drilled the hole.
4. Extract the seal by using the slide hammer action a little at a time.

If the screw pulls out of the seal, use the next size up--#8 screw and repeat process. If that fails, move to the opposite side of the seal and start again. Repeat as needed.

Good luck.

The tech manual will give you the procedure. While I have done this before it will be better to have @Tx Jim explain it as I will forget something.

The mechanical pivot isn't a pivot, it's a shaft that goes through the diff. It has bushings and seals so the oil doesn't leak out. John deere call it the load control shaft.

That being said your slide hammer and screw idea is genius and I will be co opting that for a while lot of my other jobs

Drill hole in JD utility tractor L/D seal?? I think not so.

After hyd oil has been drained, L/D control lever has been placed in "D" or "min" load control shaft can be slide to one side sufficiently to expose the seal or shaft totally removed from trans case one can utilize a sharp pick to remove the seals. Before installing new seals by pressing seal into a shape resembling a figure 8 I suggest to place seals in a cup of warm water to make reshaping seal into an "8" easier. Check shaft for wear & replace if any wear can be detected. Apply oil to shaft & seals before installing shaft. Always utilize shim washers between trans case & draft arms to remove any side to side motion of L/D shaft. https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/sidebyside/equipment/7474/referrer/navigation/pgId/2793889

I just assumed this was a steel core press-fit seal. I should know better than to answer JD questions. 🫣

I use a slightly different JD site to access OM & TM's. Search for Equipment Publications - Technical Information Store

They are the same. I just have mine saved at the first step. Your link is the 2nd step but would make it easier for somebody to search as you have that feature ready for them
