Hi

The power steering controller at the base of the steering column on our 1996 NH 2120 is leaking too much so we put it in the garage and hope to be able to repair the leak .

I’ve never done this before so any advice or suggestions are welcome.

I looked at it and thought… I may get lucky and can just tighten those connections on the indeed and out feed hydraulic lines….but I bet the leak (hard to see from where ) is coming from the top where the steering column enters the control box. Probably an O ring needs replacing.

Do I need to dismantle everything and pull that control box out of the tractor?

Yes. And once you get that far, be SURE to work on the valve with the shaft end up. To replace the most likely failed seals you only need to remove the four bolt flange from the top. Be careful to not let anything else come up or get out of place below that or you can easily get in over your head.

Thank you, that’s helpful.

I searched for the gasket kit and it appears to be unavailable.
Probably I’ll have to open the control case up and remove the O rings and carefully measure and order replacement ones from somewhere like Hercules Seals because I’m not going to find these NH numbered parts anymore. Would you agree?

Thanks !

It may not be available through New Holland any more but a GOOD hydraulic parts supply can most likely match the individual parts. I would go that route. Take it apart, see what's there, and then go from there. There's a place I go to for cylinder seals that stocks that sort of stuff. Look around, there may be someplace like that near you.

In order to get the power steering control box out of there , is it necessary to remove
- side panels
- steering column

Or, is it just necessary to remove the hydraulic lines and the 4 bolts on the steering column base?

I assume the steering shaft is a splined shaft that goes into the power steering control box and these two will need to pull apart by an inch or more first to separate and remove. Hopefully there is enough space below the control box to drop down and separate.

Does anyone know if this is correct ?

You're right about the splined shaft. I had the valve out of a 2120 some years back to replace the shaft seals, but I can't remember what all was involved in getting it out.
