22 pistol recomendations?

With Kids involved, I like the Colt Single action revolver. I have one in chrome finish and one finished natural. I do have the extra Mag cyl for both. They are safe and very accurate. I think I gave about $100 each for them new in 1978. A penny at 25 ft is no problem. Ken Sweet

What he said. Colts are pricey though. With kids the best thing going is a single action revolver. The likelyhood of an accidental discharge is greatly reduced when one must first go through the excercise of pulling back the hammer in order to fire.

My $.02,
Ruger. 4" or 6" barrel. Adgustable rear sight. Two cylinders included - .22 long rifle (or .22 shorts), .22 magnum. (Hide the magnum until you are sure they have become competent. If you look at the ballistics of a .22mag it becomes clear it aint just a '.22'. Legal to use to hunt whitetailed deer in Maine.)

Thanks guys. I need to put together a boat deal this week end and next week another but I will start the shopping while doing so.

Sounds like the short list is the Ruger and and the S&W revolvers.

Keep the ideas coming.

I have two .22 handguns-a Browning Buckmark and a Smith and Wesson K-22. My brother has a Ruger MkII, and I have shot a Ruger Single-Six. I enjoy them all-and would recommend them all, depending on your preference-Semi-auto, single action or double action revolver.

Well I was going to say, Ruger Mark II (older, used) or Ruger Mark III (new).. but it has been said many times already.. but the other guns mentioned are good too. But nothing beats the Ruger, 22 semi auto's for value, durability, accuracy, and just plain fun.. have put 10's of thousands thru mine, and still works like a champ, and extremely accurate. Suggest models with adjustable sights, as best, and I like the 5 inch "bull" barrel, but you might like the tapered barrel's for your uses. Keep in mind these guns will last a lifetime.

My Dad wouldn't let me near an autoloading rifle, much less a pistol when I was a kid.

Got to tell them the chamber can still be loaded when they remove the magazine on an autoloader.

Not my cup of tea, but the guys on RimfireCentral.com - Rimfire Community! can tell you the nuances of probably every .22 out there.

how interesting... single shot rifle for me at 12, but by the time I was 14, it was remington nylon 66 autoloading rifle, and Colt Woodsman ( a beautiful, if intricate, semi-auto pistol) for me. by 15 had my own, .357 Herters revolver, then on to .44mag. I guess it is all how you grow up and are trained.

No one has mentioned the Ruger 22/45. The polymer frame makes it lighter and cheaper than the MKIII. I think I paid about $225 bucks for mine, with a bull barrel, picatinny rail and extra mags. It's sort of a PIA to clean, but otherwise a great little pistol. My buddy's daughter (10 yrs old) used it at the pin match last week.

Well I was going to, but that is my wife's target pistol. Yes it is excellent also, the only thing I don't like about it is it uses different magazines than mine.

It depends upon the age of the kids. I took my 8 year old daughter out to shoot for her first time last summer and she shot my Browning Buckmark pistol (which is a dream shooter, btw; extremely accurate). She shot it quite well but I noticed that she had a bit of difficulty in getting a good grip on the pistol due to the size of her hands. I picked up an el-cheapo H&R .22 revolver (under $100 used) which fits her hands much, much better. I will be able to teach the smaller girls (I have two more daughters) to shoot on this and it will be more comfortable to them with the smaller grip size.

It would seem to me that the better the fit in their hands, the more comfortable they will be when shooting and hence, the more they will enjoy it.
