2305 First Service

It has been recommended that @ the first 50 hours I change transmission oil & filter, and clean transmission suction screen. Is this something I should do myself or for warranty purposes take it in to the dealer? Is it something I can do myself easily?BTW, I am not exactlly mechanically inclined but, I can hold my own when it comes to my commercial mowers. This is my first tractor.

On my 2210 I opted to have the dealer do the 50 hr. service. It cost me $592.43, including pick-up, delivery, loading the tires and replacing mower blades with Gator Blades. I decided to go this way since it was the first service, intending to do all subsequent ones myself. As you can see, it is not cheap. If you decide to do it yourself, make sure it includes: Change engine oil and filter, hydraulic oil and filter, fuel filter, check battery and clean connections, check coolant level and protection to -30F, check and adjust fan belt, check all hoses, check and adjust brakes, check air tire pressure, check MFWD oil level, check lights and flashers, grease machine and attachments, check wheel hardware torque (all taken from my 50 hr. invoice).

I did it on my 4010, and it even requires removal of one rear wheel to slide the bar that holds the lift arms in place out from in front of the hydraulic oil filter cap. I got a terrific Clark Champ compressor and air impact wrench at TSC that made removal and replacement of the wheel bolts no sweat.

If you do the front axle, hydraulics and engine oil at separate times, you should be able to use a normal, approx. 13 quart automotive drain oil saver.

Removal of the ring holding the fuel filter bowl in place requires removing the whole assembly by undoing one 12 mm bolt that holds it to the frame. Don't know whether the 2305 will have this problem or not, but on the 4010 the bowl is behind the vertical arm on the FEL assembly. That 12 mm bolt was easy to get too, but the bowl ring isn't until you remove the bolt and rotate the whole assembly up to where you can get to the ring.

Also, on my 4010, getting at the engine oil filter is made easier if you get a wrench that fits over the end of the filter. The dealer didn't have one. Got one at NAPA for the next change. For the first change, I snaked a chain wrench that I have up and over the filter to get it off. The filter on the 2305 is likely also tucked in there pretty close. Those standard oil filter wrenches just won't fit in there.

Give the ATOMIC'S a try. Very similar to Gators. I run them on all my mowers (TORO). They work good in wet grass also.

Personally, I think you can knock the 50-hour service out yourself and enjoy the experience. The only realy pain-in-the butt is getting the small hose off where the inner succ., tube in located, but very do-able.

The owners man., is very good and just following it should result in a job well done. FYI... if you are doing this yourself, just purchase a 5-gallon pal of Low vis, because that is typically cheaper than quarts or gallons to get the 3.5 gallons needed, plus a little extra for later.

Check with your dealer. Mine recommends NOT changing the engine oil at 50 hrs. He says they are getting better results by leaving the oil run twice as long the first time through. It seats the rings better and makes for a tighter engine in the long run, with less blow-by. Check with your dealer and see what he would do if it were his own tractor.

It's ok to change it at 50 hours but put fresh Break-In oil back in. Part #TY22041.
