That's crazy! What do you mean by that? Like old coal mine fires burn and travel underground?

I don't want to put words in Piloon's mouth, but when I was younger I did a lot of camping in Ontario and Quebec. We were always told that camp fires had to be doused thoroughly with water to put them out because pine tree roots could catch fire and burn underground for great distances. I don't know if it was an old wive's tale. Having tried to burn out some stumps I'm inclined to believe it was.

A lot of the forest topsoil is very much like peat moss and material is packed in loosely between the many boulders and large rocks.
I have been to a close by area days after campers left and could see wisps of smoke 10-20 feet away from the actual campfire site.

Also we had a major fire in the area in the 30's or 40's so some of us made it a point to keep an eye open and educate as many as possible.
One problem is while within 1 hour of the big city we are also in a protected gov't green zone which tends to attract tree hugger type wannabee's who simply do not have wilderness 'smarts'.

One day I spotted a youth making a camp fire under a cedar overhang and that on top of 'peat like soil'.
He literally told me to FO so we called the fire dept.
Actually it was in the evening and the smoke that drifted our way kept us from sleeping due to worry as well as coughing.

Yes they do and in many places.

There is one town in the US that had to be abandoned due to fire in an underlying coal mine.

Having said 'like', he knows about old coal mine fires. He was asking about similar situations in QC. I wasn't sure if they have peat bog fires or not.
