John Deere 301-a
first post so g o easy on me! I just purchased a John Deere 301-a gas. I have been trying to research but im just coming up a lil short. I need to change all fluids. i do have operators manual but i seems only to cover diesel version.

what weight engine oil?
it has water in hydraulic fluid, is there a way to flush or just change it twice? what brand/weight of fluid?
transmision filter/screen? this is differ in my wrong manual. what is the packing it refers too?

I am sure you will get different opinions, but I would use 15w40 engine oil. Back when these were new, the manual called for SAE30 for summer and 10 or 20 for winter. That was before multi viscosity was popular. Transmission oil is near impossible to get all the water out without changing it multiple times. I am partial to the John Deere Hygard, but there are other options. Just be sure the label says it MEETS specs for J20C, If it says compatible with it, that is not the same as meets specs. Since you will need to change multiple times, you could try a cheaper alternative and run it a couple of hours and then switch to JD Hygard. There is a rubber packing on the trans filter cup that should be replaced each time filter is changed. Part number R34733. It does not come with the filter. Filter part number is AR75603. The sump screen does not have a rubber packing. It should have an aluminum washer to seal it and can be used over typically.

DItto what jd110 stated. Here's a photo showing screen location in trans housing. IIRC ind tractors have a hyd hose attached to screen retainer fitting.

Cracked shift boots are a common entry point for water on the AG tractors. I am not sure if Industrial are the same.

Thanks for the great info! Exactly what I was looking for.

The shift boots were cracked one actually fell off on the trip home

Yes ag & ind tractors shift lever boots are the same culprit for letting water in trans. Another overlooked area is a stopped up breather on the hyd filler cap that won't let condensation in warm oil evaporate.
