Had a massive hydraulic fluid dump last week. Started the tractor to move snow in 5 degree temps. Did a few odds and ends waiting for the tractor to warm up. When I came back to it, it was dumping the last of the hydraulic on the ground. Leak was a blown-out gasket at the high pressure hydraulic filter base. So I installed a new filter, filled it up with Hy-Gard (not Lo-Vis Hy-Gard). Got several hours out of it and a few days later had the same thing happen at about 10 degrees. Fortunately it blew as soon as I started it so it saved a bunch of money in lost oil. Thinking I need to put Lo-Vis in it next fall but I sure hate to buy 22 quarts of John-Deere liquid gold twice a year. Anybody else have a problem like this? OEM filter, tightened to base contact +1 turn.

Never heard of such a thing.. maybe can learn something to watch out for in the future. But something not right..

Sounds like its something other than the filter gasket. Something is causing high pressures in the hydraulic system. I had that happen on a pickup I bought new in 1975. The entire filter blew off the mounting base. Something within the system had stuck and an over-pressure caused this.

Does their manual call for lo-vis hygard. I would put that in.

I make sure the filters are on plenty tight using plenty of finesse. Are you sure there are not two gaskets, one that stayed on the face when you put the other filter on?

I never heard of that happening so keep us posted.

Fortunately, it's not likely to be that cold again any time soon. I intend to replace the filter again. I will mark it on the base and the filter just to make sure that it is not doing some kind of freak back off thing. Good question about the gasket but no, there's only one there. I intend to give it just a little extra tight next time. I will definitely look at running Lo-Vis next November or so. Normally there are more days when the temps are at the high end of Lo-Vis than the low end of regular Hy-Gard. But this has to stop. Thanks all for the replies. I will definitely post any findings and at least an update.

I will deff be following, I am curious to the reason for it. I also have never heard of something like this before

Leak was a blown-out gasket at the high pressure hydraulic filter base.

Where have you learned or read that this is a "high pressure" filter? I'm curious..

Is this the transmission HST filter LVA16054 rather than the suction filter LVA14703 ??

Maybe building pressure somehow in the HST transmission?

I need to ask, is there a chance the transmission has been over filled? That might lead to high pressure problem?

I have not learned or read that this is a "high pressure" filter. I would re-phrase that to pressurized filter based on the fact that oil was spewing out. At what pressure it operates, I don't know. It's possibly/probably some type of slip-stream off of the discharge circuit.

Yes, the LVA16054

Entirely possible............based on the oil spewing out.

No. And I doubt that overfilling could cause high pressure because I think it's basically a sump.

All good points. I do intend to talk to the service manager next week and get a John Deere opinion.

Will be interested to hear what you find out. They should be able to check for any pressure leaks in the transmission.
I was trying to interpret what was said in the operator's manual.
