I felt a slight jerk from my 3320s transmission. I stopped and checked everything, saw no problems and continued on. I was in 4wd and tried to go over a 4" log later on but the front tires would not move and there was a popping sound like gears not engaging. When selecting 2WD the jerk was gone and everything worked correctly. I checked the fluid and tried moving the lever in and out of 4WD several times with no change. What do I check next?

Check to see if a stick from the woods may have caught up underneath and binding something up so it doesn't fully engage in 4wd. Just a thought,,,

On some of the 4wd tractors not all of them they have balls on each end of the drive shaft 6 on each end . Some time they work out of the slots. If yours has the balls on the drive shaft look at the pivet point on the front end there is usually 4 bolt that may work lose and let play get in the front end lets the drive shaft move to much and the balls come out of the slots . It will make some noise when you lock it I'm 4wd but not all the time.

The 3320 has splined couplings on the driveshaft.. I have seen some strip the splines at higher hours. How many hours do you have? ALso, did you check front axle oil or transmission oil?

I would suspect it has either a broken drive shaft or stripped splines/gears to the front axle. When my tractor quit working it was a broken drive shaft, but it didn't make one bit of noise when engaged so I am thinking your might be a stripped spline or even broken teeth on the front drive axle.

700 hours and I checked the Axle oil.

Could be nothing more than the lever is bent or the shifter is broke inside of the housing not letting it engage fully. Also could be stripped too..

Gary Fowler wins this one. The front drive shaft is connected to a short shaft that goes into the differential by a collar. The splines on the differential end of the collar were stripped and there was a small amount of wear on the shaft. My concerns were that just replacing the collar would put me back in the same situation again so I was planning on replacing the shaft in the differential but DJ wants $800.00 for that tiny shaft! I ordered a new collar and cut the good end off the old one and will weld it on the new one so the collar will grab more of good splines on the shaft. This is the second time I have needed some strange part that JD Tripled the price of what I was expecting to pay and then added a zero to the end of it. The dealer parts guy was having a hard time believing that the collar had stripped because he had never heard of that so I brought it in and showed him. He then asked me how many hours I had on the tractor. When I told him 700 he said Oh, well there you go. No one puts that many hours on those tractors. I was happy with my tractor but now if it's going to keep breaking and JD is going to rape me when I try to fix it I may need to look into Kubota.

Nobody puts 700 hours on "those tractors"???? Great - I'm at 592 hours now on my 3520 so by this time next year my tractor that I bought 13 months ago should be at the end of its useful life.

Don't let parts' guys diagnose your tractor, as they are interested in selling parts. :)
And the age old "never heard of that before" is an automatic response that many service people use.
They either have very short memories or are just setting you up for a big service charge.
