Hi,
I am looking at a used (400 hrs) 4100 hst with a new JD QT loader. I cannot go to see the tractor b4 purchase. Dealer said it has been repainted (sunfade) and looks great @ $9500. Good deal? Good enough to accept some risk (I will have to have tractor shipped, it's too far away) If so, I will need to run a brush hog and a finish mower behind it (3pt). How large of each type do I dare go, I don't want to put undue stress on the tractor.

Thanks,
Scott

I have a 4100 with 410 loader and am well familiar with the capabilities of this tractor. It is an excellent small estate, landscaping, mantenance type of tractor. It will easily handle a 5' finish mower or 4' rotary cutter (brush hog). I also use mine to handle a 52" rototiller. As long as you stick with these size implements, the 4100 will handle them just fine. If you want to use larger implements, then you need to upsize your tractor wish list. 400 hours isn't much, but I'd do some more research into the condition of the tractor before buying. If it's in good condition, then the price is more than fair.

I have to question the repaint do to sunfade situation. Seeing as how the hood and fenders are plastic with the color molded into them is fading a real problem on the JD 4000 series. Can any other JD owners remark on this. And second if the plasic is repainted will it stick very good. that plastic is prone to vibrate quite a bit.

Scott....

I'd be real careful here in buying a tractor sight unseen. 400 hours is a decent amount for break-in but also to reveal any mechanical problems that may be evident. I've never heard of such a new tractor having to have it's fender/hood repainted due to sunfade. My 425 JD garden tractor has the same plastic cowling for a hood and it hasn't faded yet....looks as well as it did when I bought it in 1995. What else isn't this dealer telling you?

Caveat emptor, my friend!!!!!!!!

I'd stay away from it. My 4600 has 1500 hrs. on it from hard use and the paint still looks brand new. There's no reason to have to repaint that tractor unless there was more to it. Take it from someone who has been there to NEVER buy something sight unseen no matter how good of a deal it is.

Would you purchase a used vehicle sight unseen? With a used vehicle new paint should be cause for suspicion. Same thing here. Buying a used tractor or anything that you can see and test prior to purchase is risky enough.

There are no plastic body parts on the 4100.

I'm a bit partial to metal, myself. Plastic does have its place, though!
