Hi there - you guys really provide great feedback, so I thought I'd throw in my existential questions /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a ranch in mendocino, CA with lots of rough land and miles of dirt road to maintain. Right now I also need to trench down many miles of pipe. Later I need to mow my little vineyard w/ 8ft spacing. Finally, I need to spread lime in an orchard (few acres). I already have a backhoe so I dont care about a loader.

Soo... like everyone I started low and talked myself up.. For serious trenching I need Hydro and at least 25 hp on the PTO. For rocky condition I probably need a bit more, so I guess TC33 or 4210 is MINIMUM. But to get to 4cyl and more power, I'm now thinking to splurge on TC40D. Like some of you I like the green ones, so that is why I'm looking at those, but they seem much less tractor to me..

Comments?
* Smaller vs. larger
* JD vs. NH
* Other brands?

THanks!
Jacob.

If your doing finish mowing in your orchard the 60'' JD 7-iron deck is hard to beat. It's the best cutting deck I have ever used in our orchard.

What seems less?? The New Holland, John Deere or the smaller tractors?

If you like and feel more comfortable with the John Deere that is what I would go with. If you are liking the New Holland now that you have driven one then do some more investigating. Either one will do a fine job. I would get to know the dealers and make your decision on the dealer you like the best, after all if there is any problems your only as good as your dealer. Take your time, buying is half the fun of owning.

I own a class III Boomer (TC45D) and when I have the loader off a smile always comes to my face because I just can't believe that front visibility with the sloping hood. I also like the weight of the machine (around 3,500#) and such nice things as a fuel tank that's very accessible behind the driver's seat. I don't think you will find a better pedal layout on any tractor. With the brakes on the left side and the hydro controls on the right, you can brake and turn on a dime using differential braking.

I'm sure you can find most or all of these things in a Deere, with the exception of the visibility. It's really your choice. I don't know any reason to buy the Deere or NH except personal preference.

Thanks this is helpful. One thing: JD just seems more expensive for the same HP - it that just my dealers or generally the case? J.

It must be a regional price issue - I recently bought a JD 4310 with a FEL and BH - the comparable NH was about $3000 more than either the Bota L3130 or the Deere 4310. I like the NH's, if you can get a good deal it's a great looking unit. I wasn't too concerned about getting the "biggest" tractor since I plan on storing it in my garage which is tight - so the mid-chassis Deere worked out real well for me. I can get the whole thing in there FEL and BH on. But if parking it inside wasn't an issue for me I may have looked at the large chassis Deere CUT's - say a 4610 or 4710. Good luck with the searching - I had almost as much fun shopping the brands as I do actually using it now.

Take Care,

Both brands are awesome.

When I was shopping, I was looking at these same models. They are sililar in power, the Deeres being mid chassis, the NH are large. For me, I liked the power/size combination of the Deere, and several other aspects.

I really liked the sloping hood of the NH, but was surprised that the Deere isn't much if any worse. Of course, it IS a smaller machine, which also shows up in turning, etc.

As to 4 vs. 3 cylinders, all are pretty bullet proof engines. You don't hear of any of these falling apart, or having reliabilty issues. And they really are smooth and efficient. Now, NH guys might have specific issues between their 3's and 4's...

As was said, pricing is very regional, and sometimes getting several bids, and making sure that the dealer isn't just giving you some ballpark price, can really help

Jacob it really boils down to what you are comfortable with. If the tractor is capable of the work that you expect it to perform, and if you are comfortable with the fit of the tractor and the layout of all the controls then the rest is just semantics. After all you are the one that will be working with it for some years to come, It's a marriage so to speak.
