Anyone have a snapshot from the service manual of the removal of the starter on a 4320 compact tractor?

Should be easy but the second bolt is dicey.

Thank
Dave.

To get at the back bolt, I used an extension on a 3/8 drive socket ratchet. I think I may have stacked (2) shorter ones together to give me enough length to swing the ratchet from the back of the starter. Changing that starter took me between 15 and 20 minutes and I think the new one cost less than $ 150 from Amazon.

Be careful with Amazon stuff. Could be substandard made in China.
Well whatever they did with this one really worked. It cranks the tractor better than the OEM (Bosch) one ever did, even on real cold days last winter. Not sure how long it will last though. If it more than the 3 or 4 years I got out of the original, I’ll be lots of money ahead.

The last cheap aftermarket (PowerStrike) that I had on it gave me about 10 trouble free years before it started to peter out. It never cranked as good as the new Amazon one that I have on it now.

I saved the PowerStrike one when I took it off. The solenoid and positive connection still looked good on it. That’s what corroded and went bad on the original. If and when I can locate that (probably burried under some junk in the back of my barn), and if the solenoid is interchangeable, I’ll combine parts to give me a spare.

A bearing or bushing wore out on the PowerStrike and the rotor was just flopping around in there. It still started the tractor, when it was warm out, but drew lots of amps (and needed a jump) whenever it was cold.

My only other 3-point tractor (1951 Ford 8n) is down and out for the foreseeable future so that John Deere 4120 is really earning its keep right now.

Your wiring harness is in this side of the starter. Mine is jammed behind it and it isn't moving.

Damn, they must have assembled that one on a Monday morning after their football team lost on Sunday.

Sounds about right since the aftermarket one of questionable origin was $ 146 on Amazon when I got it about a year ago.

I have had good experiences with the cheap starters over the years. I went through a bad period some years ago with my diesel zero turn mowers that were eating starters. I replaced each starter once, then when they failed again, realized the solenoid was available separately for $20. Replaced those maybe every 400 hours (one year), then added a starter relay on both machines which saved the solenoids from failing.

Success, I got it out. Had to cut a few zip ties to loosen the wiring harness enough to get the socket on.
