If your battery is that dead that you only read 3.47 volts, you should surely charge it or get another battery. The 3.47 vdc is telling me there is something wrong with your wiring or you have a defunct battery. I would disconnect the alternator and read voltage right at the output terminal with nothing attached. Don't let it run too long that way, but that should be a quick check.

a safer way to do that is to provide a load at the alt charge stud, like a lamp bulb.. even a cheap-o turn signal or dome lamp.. or headlamp.. just something for the reg to provide a steady field curent for vs a spike.

I agree.. bat volts should appear at that lug for the charge unless there is a bad wire somewhere.. or the bat is toast..

Yep! Any 12vdc load is best even if it is a jumper battery or one of those little air compressors with alligator clips. He should read 14 vdc out of that alternator with such a light load if the alternator is working.

Alright guys, I trickled charged the battery on the 2 amp setting for 24 hours. It was reading 11.63 volts.

I hooked it back up to tractor and fired up the tractor at both the alternator and the battery, I had readings of 14 volts.
