case IH 485
Hey guys,
I have a 1989 Case/International 485.

Problem #1

When I push the clutch in to shift into gear I get a slight grinding noise unless I push the clutch in and wait 5-6 seconds.

Problem #2
Over the past few months it has been harder to shift from low range (where I ususally run it) to high range. The Hi/Lo range stick moves freely when I go from Lo range forward and pull it straight back to Reverse.

Yesterday, I noticed that in low range the gear speed stick would only go into 1st ans 2nd gear. It would NOT go into 3rd or 4th gear.

Other than this the tractor has done all I have asked of it.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

I can't tell you that I know what your problem(s) are, but the throwout bearing in this tractor has a teflon-type face on it and is designed to run on the clutch fingers all the time. I suppose it's possible that the plastic face has worn off the bearing and you are not getting enough clutch pedal travel to release the clutch. The owners' manual says that the face of the clutch pedal should be 6 5/16" from the footrest. I'm not where I can look at my tractor right now, but I think there is an inspection plate on the bottom of the clutch housing that will allow visual inspection of the bearing. If the clutch travel is the problem it seems to me that these shifting problems should go away with the engine stopped and the tractor driveline not in a bind.

I have a full Case-IH shop manual for the 85 series tractor but it has no troubleshooting section for the transmission.

Thank you Sir,
I found that replacing the Hyd. filter and filling w/ fresh Hyd fluid corrected about 95% of the problem.

I will look for the inspection port also.

thanks for your time,
Keith

That's great that the filter and fluid helped. Maybe it will circulate into all the tight areas and completely get back to normal.

I have an '89 385 that I bought 2 years ago with 504 hrs on it. It had lots of water in the hydraulic oil so I had to drain and flush with cheap hydraulic oil before finally putting a quality oil in it. I keep it shedded so hopefully the water issues are gone.

I'm really impressed with the work these tractors will do because of their weight. Good luck with yours. Let us know if anything else develops with it.

Gene,
I didn't realize that I hadn't responded to your last post. Sure didn't mean to come off as rude or unappreciative of your help.

The fluid level was low. I felt it was a good time to drain all of it and change the filter. Seems to work great now. Even after all the time since our original exchange.

thanks for you time/help,

Keith
