Yanmar ym1510d
I have a Yanmar YM1510 D. This thing is awesome! I’ve had it for just a little under a year and have used it for all sorts of different things despite the front wheel assist not engaging. The shifter you use to engage the four-wheel-drive moves freely and I don’t feel it ever engage. In reading other posts on this forum it sounds like that is likely one of the pins has sheared off. Two questions I have:

1) does that sound like the likely issue?

2) In order to replace it do I have to split the tractor? If so, see my picture. Would I just split it right behind where the four-wheel-drive shifter is? Or would I split it a foot and a half further up where the clutch is (I included a picture of this spot also for reference)? I watched a hoye tractor video of them splitting a tractor to replace a clutch.

If I were going to split I would splitwhere clutch housing bolts to motor. May have to go further, but that would be my starting point. I guess you have this drawing. 4WD_SHIFTER: Yanmar Tractor Parts
Thanks for the response. Do you suggest splitting there due to familiarity? Or why do you suggest that?

I've never studied this issue but I expect the problem is down where the shift lever moves a collar or something, and this may be accessible under the tractor without taking apart anything else.

I'll be interested to read what you find. Mine (YM186D) is stiff to shift and I worry something will eventually break.

Here is the drawing for the 186, very similar to the 1510. Not sure either of these is going to have easy access to get to that linkage.

Have you visually confirmed the shaft is rotating with the lever.

I got underneath the tractor and could see the linkage is moving with the lever. You have to look through the drivetrain and everything. I’m not sure yet if I’ll be able to access it without splitting it or not. I’ll try to video it when I do it so I can share it.

Good idea. I got under to look at it. It looks like I might be able to access it from underneath. I’ll have to remove some things, but that hopefully would be easier than splitting it. I’ll try to video when I do it so I can share.

On the YM186D you can replace the four wheel drive shifter without splitting the tractor.
In the picture that winston1 posted, you can see the large nut #3, unscrew it and the shift linkage all comes out except the block #10, which is on the shaft #8.
