5’x8’ Aluminum Trailer Kit

Built two Harbor Freight 4x8 “Heavy Duty” trailer kits a few years ago. Made some minor upgrades and it was a handy unit. Sold it for more than paid when I got another cargo van, second went to a relative.

Needed something to occasionally tow my snowmobiles. sick of fighting rust so purchased the Northern Tool Alumium 5’x8’kit. They also have various steel trailer kits.

Should arrive in the next few days. Using marine plywood for the decking. Tires will have to be upgraded, Ill take a look at the wiring harness, and may upgrade the hardware although reviews are pretty good on the supplied components.

Our local TSC has a very nice 5x8 trailer - it's very convenient for light loads (ATV's, motorcycles, firewood etc). They sell a ton of em for $900.

Those are popular but don’t work for me. Had an Aluma 548 which was much nicer, but snowmobile didn’t fit. Hope to start unpacking and laying it out shortly.

Your snowmobiles will hang off a foot or so with an 8' trailer. Standard snowmobile trailers start at 10' long x 8' wide.

Built two Harbor Freight steel trailers previously. This is a 2005 Yamaha Venture 2 up sled. Now we have a Ski Doo Enduro and an old Yamaha Phazer, both shorter and lighter.

Works fine. While the bed is 8’ the trailer is 12’ long, and most of the weight of a snowmobile is up front. Towed great: just used for bringing in for service. There were other straps, this was preliminary.

The HF trailer would tilt but the new one doesn’t seem to. Load the sleds on with extended fork tines.

Bought my first HF kit (the 1,715 capacity model) for $215. Trailer market is crazy due to shortages: there have been two price increases since this version was purchased.

Had a couple hours to assemble. A 24” framing square is useful to make sure everything is true.

Assembled the bolts loosely, then checked everything, then tightened, then checked. If it isn’t perfectly square the only one who will ever know is you….

Have to carefully check the assembly Instructions: it’s easy to flip parts the wrong way.

Just under two hours work. Time estimate was seven hours but don’t see how it could take more than four.

The tires that come with these things are rated 45mph. Unsat, and I want a spare.

1. Are these easy to change at home? 5.30x12.

2. Bias ply vs radials for a small trailer like this? (1,715 lb rating).

Debating buying a pair of wheels with tires mounted, keeping one original as a spare, and selling the other for someone who wants a spare.
