Bo,

Come on over to my place, bring 2-5 boxes of ammo and I'll teach you this class for free...
some Fam Fire, some OBL targets, and you will be VERY WELL intorduced to the AR-15...

:D

David

Well, I would, but the local range is only 10 miles away, and I believe you are at least 1500. Gas would be 10X the course fee! :)

Yeah, you have a good point...

Hopefully you will have a good trainer, around here it seems anyone can get certified to be a trainer. I was pretty underwhelmed by our trainer. He later went out of business as it was discovered his bio was pretty much fictitious. He left owing his training personnel and about everyone else. Fortunately, for me it was just a formality as I had gone through a lot of training with my department and my wife was trained by our son and later actually went through one of his classes.

I have been looking around for about 6 months and finally decided on this place because of what I heard about the trainer. He is suppose to be really good.

The vast majority of older military M16A1's are 1:12 twist. This was compatible (perhaps somewhat marginally) with the M193 55gr ball ammo in use at the time.

M16A2's through current M16A4's have 1:7 twist, as do derivatives such as the M4 and SPR.

The twist rate does not markedly increase ballistic range. The increased twist rate came about because of the introduction of the standardized NATO-spec M855 62gr cartridge (using the SS109 "penetrator" projectile with a hardened steel core) and the correlated development of the M249 SAW (aka FN Mini-Mi). Once the M249 SAW was introduced into the field, ammunition standardization meant that all 5.56mm weapons would use the same ammo. The M855 has better penetration of light armor at longer ranges than the M193 it replaced. The now-unused M193 cartridge, however, has better penetration at shorter ranges due to the higher muzzle velocity.

This was and is not a factor in caliber nor twist selection.

The primary wounding mechanism of high velocity 5.56mm projectiles is yaw, dislocation/fragmentation at the cannelure (the ridged circumferential ring where the projectile is seated to the case), and a resultant large wound cavity due to multiple fragments and hydrostatic pressure. In general, with 5.56mm if there is in fact an exit wound it is indicative of poor projectile performance.

Gun store counter stories.

You mean "ball powder". All military cartridges use ball (FMJ) projectiles, excluding some special types (specifically OTM) that are used strictly for long range sniping applications. Look at the side of a 840 round 5.56mm ammo can: "AMMUNITION, BALL, 5.56mm M855". Gunpowder is available in ball and stick geometry, and it was the ball gunpowder that cause initial M16 teething problems.

Despite all this, the basic AR15/M16 design has not changed in 50 years, and the majority of the world's special operations forces use a derivative.

The issue is not expending the entire magazine, it is maintaining accuracy for the duration. Full auto is used for suppressive fire, and generally not aimed fire such as with semi-auto and 3 round burst.
i did mean Ball Powder. One of our grandchildren was wanting to use the PC to play games and I suppose I was somewhat in a hurry. I found this on the Internet, and thought that I would post it. Thanks for reading. www.abovetopsecret,com/forum/thread272545/pg1 and www.ar15armory.com/forums/55gr-FMJ-1-7-twist-t114022html dear Sir: I am unaware of your background. I sincerely hope that you never experience actual violent, explosive combat. I also wish that you never have to help put lime on one of your comrades's bodies before helping to place them in a body bag. One other thing, I hope that your grandchildren never have to ask what those scars are from or try to explain marks left from leeches. It is not my intention to place judgement or write in a condescending manner, but if you were not "In Country", it would be advisable to talk with experience instead of using GOOGLE. Have a nice day. Enough said.

Interesting post and thank you for your service.

I have never been in combat, shot at, but no combat and I find all of this interesting if only from an academic standpoint as the likelihood of me ever using any of my firearms for anything other than recreation is really slim.

I never really thought about the differences between 5.56 and .223 because I hand load everything and would never want to run cheap "millitary surplus" ammo in a $2500 rifle:confused2:

I shoot a DPMS panther race gun with a burris signature 8-32x50 mil-dot scope. Hand loaded 55gr ballistic silvertip bullets w/ 25.5 or 26 grains (cant remember for sure) or varget.

It takes about an hour to load just a few boxes but it is about $6/box and super accurate. 1/4 MOA in no problem at all. And I really like the mil-dot. There is a prettycool calculator I use online for terminal ballistics. JBM - Calculations and the mil-dots in the scope arent all the same. But I took the time to sight the scope on grid paper @ 100yds so I know how many mills each line is, and use the calculator to know my exact range at each line. Its kinda like cheating but if it isnt too windy, 350-400yd shots on ground-hogs are no problem at all.

Dad also hand loads .22-250 for accuracy in his custom varmit gun on a 700adl remington action.

Reloading is actuall quite rewarding and very affordable once you are set up. To load another caliber only takes a $30-$40 set of new dies:thumbsup:

Back on topic though....My DPMS is labled .223, but I have no doubt it would handle the hotter 5.56 rounds. But I wouldnt want to because I am sure they arent very accurate and 5.56 rounds dont normally have varmit bullets. And even if I had a 5.56 that "could" shoot both, I wouldnt want to because the head-space difference would make accuracy worse. And there aint no point in shooting if you cant hit what you are aiming at.

.

yep.. and considering that you can get into a basic setup for about 250$ and be loading.. or go for a lil more than 1000$ and have a nice full fleshed out setup.. and as you say.. add a new caliber for 30$ a pop.. :)
