Picked up a used tractor for a song almost a year ago. Fuel gauge doesn't work all the time.............saw something about there had been a recall on the sending units, didn't look very deeply into that.
My lovely bride who may be left at home with the tractor while I am away for work, didn't like this.....scared that she might run out of fuel............
So thinking that we were low on fuel decided to drain the tank, remove and repair/replace the sender.
Start draining the tractor through the petcock, fill up first 5 gallon jug....still coming out..........ok, I'll buy another jug ....it CAN'T have more than 10 gallons left......................
Day 2 fill the second jug and fuel isn't slowing down...............
Day 3.......Bring in 5 gallon pail..............DOH!! still not slowing down, find another pail, bail some fuel around so i have more space.....
AHHH FINALLY 17 gallons out of the 22 gallon tank that I thought should be close to empty................
Start to remove the sender....5 capscrews 8mm head...well 4 of them will work with an 8mm socket.....have to fight the last one.....Thought crosses my mind.....should I match mark this .....well no paint pen ....it kinda looks symmetric....should have looked in the book...oh well......it's only taken me 3 days (did I mention the tractor isn't @ home it lives @ the horse boarding barn with the lovely bride's horse....) I'll just drop it. Get it out no visible damage, key in ignition, lovely bride watching gauge, move float around..... ah it's fine from the bottom to about 3-4" from the top stop.......ok...let's look up the price now that I have part number (yes I know I could have gotten part number and price on line with no real effort....certainly one **** of a lot less than I've already put in).
HOLY $#!& they want over $150 bucks for this thing!!!!!! Screw that, go back mark where it goes on the fritz, come home 2 zip ties and some JB Weld and now the float can't go past the good part.....wait 24 hours for the epoxy to cure.....pick up capscrews and washers @ local industrial store $0.50!!! A savings of $1.50 over Dear....err Deere.....
Flat on back again 4 bolts in #5 won't go...WTF.....loosen up wiggle no joy.....use something in the threadserts to line up some more ....still nothing....after way too long decide let's put sender up without the gasket and see if this goes in only 1 way............
Going back tomorrow with paint pen and gasket glue............
But hey I've saved $150 bucks!!! DOH
