I have a problem with my steering on my late 40's early 50's 8N. I got stuck in a ditch yesterday and one of the front wheels was in the air, the other n the mud. I was finally able to back my way out, but I did something to the front end. Now the front tires are splayed, and when I turn one way, the inside tire turns, but the outside tire turns more, thereby causing it to slide rather than turn. It don't see any bends in the front axle, tire rods or arms, is it possible it slipped a tooth inside the steering box? Is there any simple fix? Something always seems to wrong for me. Maybe I'm just rough on the equipment. Any suggestions? Thanks

Lets start with taking the steering wheel from lock to lock (all the way left then to right). Devide number of turns in half and set steering wheel there. Then look down at the steering arms coming off the box and see if they are matched with each other and report back.

for the tires to splay like that, I'd think something other than a sector gear slipped.. if you havn't seen them.. they are some awefully big teeth to overide each other and then still work.

look at the draglinks.. and radius rods.. are there bends or bows on one side.. especially making the front axle set crooked.. ie.. end of the axle on one side nearer the rear than on the other.. perhaps even tilted forward.

look at the pittman arms on the front spindles.. any bends.. ( or evidence soemthing turned / slipped? same with the steering arms on the sector shafts.. both should be barely swept back with wheel centered and front wheels straight.

with this steering box, a wormshaft has a nut riding it.. the ballnut.. this nut has gear teeth on one side that engages one of the sector gears.. this gear runs one steering arm.. this gear has a set of teeth on it's back that runs the other sector gear.. that gear runs the other arm.. sector gear to gear alignment is pretty solid, UNLESS you had lots of backlash play in your steering already.

was it loosey/goosey slopy before?

post back.

while the early box has dismal adjustment available.. it is repairable.. later box is much easier to adjust.. etc. both work on the same principal though.. just some parts difference in how they do it.
