It's been a busy couple of months.
1st meet Blaze. He is a retired police horse that spent his career working in the ghetto. He is about 20 years old. It is an honor for us to provide him with a safe/comfortable home with plenty of attention through his retirement years.....
Once the opportunity arose to adopt Blaze my wife made getting a barn built a priority. She has wanted horses as long as she can remember and has been riding since she was a teenager. Getting a well trained, gentle police horse was a no-brainer. All other house projects ceased and operation "make a home for horsies" went ahead full steam.
We hired out building of the barn shell (24'x36'). I built a great 24'x24' garage years ago so I'm sure I could have built this but now we live a bit further from potential assistants and time was more of an issue this time around. Built by Cleary Buildings and they did a great job for a reasonable price. Excellent ventilation and natural light.
The barn was built a foot out of the ground to ensure it won't flood (we aren't in a flood area but after heavy rains we get some reasonable size ponds in low areas of the property). So right around 90 tons of gravel was added to the barn for a well draining floor.
Then on to the joy of building stalls.....
.....and adding dutch doors for easy access to the 1/3 acre pasture....
Blaze finally gets to come to his new home....
.....and, of course, he needs a buddy. Meet Sky a retired riding school, therapeutic pony....
Not a great pic but this shows a bit of the layout on the property (5.17 acres) and how much we still have to fence (about 3.5 acres total). Hopefully the fencing will get done (by me) by early next year. I also paid to have water run about 200' from the house to the barn and I just wrapped up running electric so we can deal with things in the evenings/early mornings. Lotsa work but I'm finally caught up after 2 months of non-stop shenanigans and now it's on to "normal" house maintenance.
Just a few more property pics. I've gone full blown hillbilly......
