ok so I've considered buying one. But all the videos I've watched are demonstrating the tool on surfaces that are already in good shape. I'm wanting to see what they will do on a heavily rutted caliche road. You know, one that has been driven on after a heavy rain and has dried out and is hard. That is why I am looking to buy one, to repair these types of roads.
Yeah they make a road that is already pretty look very nice, how are they going to do on a road that is in crappy condition?

just kind of wondering out loud here.

looking at one that the front blade is like

Galion 14H Motor Grader Blade

You will want a Land Plane with Ripping shanks. Mine has them. I ave taken deeply rutted, washboard hard pack parking lots and driveways & made them brand new. It is on of my favorite tools next to the winch.

Definitely want rippers on it! I have a 72" LP Plane with 5 rippers. My driveway was exactly what you described when I bought the place. It took me several attempts to finally get it smoothed out, but it worked like a champ!

Allen,
If I have to go to Lubbock in the next few weeks I could drop off my land plane for you to try out for the day. My 4520 and your 5740 are a close size match and would give you an idea of what would work for you.

A landplane for your situation will be a cross between;
not being a heavy enough LP to do the job,
and
too heavy of a LP for the tractor.

How long is the road to be fixed? Maybe you would be best with a 4 or 5 foot wide LP?

Possibly, with ripping shanks, you could only drop three, concentrating the weight/HP,,,

I may come have a look at your machine but I don't have the work yet that I am talking about . super offer and I appreciate it. My brother in law has one that he has offered also, I know nothing about it but I could use it to get an idea of what it will do. I am looking at a heavy machine. PM me with you information and I may show up. I'm retired now (since 11/11/16) and I have time to run around a bit.

The roads are long private roads about 10 foot wide. I think I can handle quite a heavy blade and it will have to be 6 foot (at least). I have a land pride RBT3584 full hydraulic blade that my tractor handles quite well. I also pull a very heavy Oliver 3 bottom rollover breaking plow, (video in my signature). Maybe I am overloading my tractor.

A landplane is really a "grooming" tool, not a "primary tillage" tool.

I have never seen a LP with a heavier built blade assembly than mine,, and I worry about mine.
My blade is two 5/8" thick hardened steel CAT motor grader blades, each about 8" wide.

When something immovable hits the center of that blade,, (like caliche) why does it not collapse??

Could you start with some other tool, and use the LP to groom?

It appears that I will have to start with a different tool.
Hmm immovable object on center of the blade. Somehow, I resemble that remark. :D
