Why is the actual cut width of my "6" foot Brush Hog cutter making a measured 5 feet wide cut. ??

I purchased a 6 foot Brush Hog Model 296 cutter or at least that is what I paid for.

I've got a 286, the model prior to the 296. It's essentially the same mower only with a re-designed deck. It cuts a full 6'. Check and see if the blades are fully extended.

It is a 5 foot or it has the wrong blades on it.With that said the first thing I do to a new bushhog is take the blades off and cut a 1/2 inch off the blades. if I buy new blades I cut 1/2 inch off.

What is the reason for doing that?

I know the cutter is as wide as my car hauler.

Maybe the blades are too short or one or both is not swinging freely.
I will have to check these things out next time I am at my country place.

Also, why cut blades ?

My JD 6 footer cuts 6 feet. Also puzzled about cutting the blade tips off.

I keep one bush hog for work for deer hunters . They think you can bush hog anything . The sides get bent and the blades hit the sides when you turn. I cut 1/2 inch off so I don't have to listen to the noise when it get bent. They pay good money , The money comes from 40 people and not just one.

My 4' is 4'. Interesting on cutting the tips of the blades, first I thought it might be because branches can get stuck between the side and blade, but then remembered the blades swing and that's not a problem. I do have this problem on my FM when I venture into some sticks. It'll get pinned to the side and the belt will start slipping.

Good Luck,
Rob
