Any one have a air bag go off??

I was wondering if any one has had a accident where the air bag went off? What injuries did you suffer? I was involved in a crash about a month ago and the air bag went off. I was taken to the emergency room because I thought it had broken my brest bone. It hit me so hard I couldn't breathe. Heart was acting up. X-ray showed no broken bones. I am so sore I can hardly move. Feels like I have a hot iron on my chest. Has slowly gotten a little better.

It's a heck of a thing to survive a minor crash and get killed by an airbag. Safety first.

I had a minor fender bender where the brakes failed on a work truck and I tagged the back of a mini van.

Mini van faired pretty well except for the wedding cake it was hauling.

The little Nissan truck i was driving suffered some pretty major front end damage and got totalled.

Anyway, when I went to pull the truck out of the travel lane, I had to hop a 6" curb onto the side walk. Had one hand in the 12 o'clock position on the steering wheel and the airbag went off.

Airbag shot my hand off the steering wheel and broke my nose. I also suffered some friction burns on my lower arm from the airbag as well as getting a lung full of that powder.

Ended up in front of the truck, on my knees coughing my brains out for a few minutes.

I've heard that same story 3 times in regards to injuries. I have a friend who's a State Trooper. He says don't drive with your hand on top of the wheel. Worse he says is 10/2 positions with both hands. Several years ago a neighbor lady had a wreck with her hands probably closer to 11/1. Two blackeyes and both arms burned.

Another thing they say about air bags. Try to keep the steering wheel as far from you as possible. And aimed more towards your chest instead of your head.

Which can be a challenge in some older vehicles. If your short, your to close to the steering wheel. If your tall, the steering wheel is aimed at your head to make room for your knees.

Not so much of an issue with newer vehicles where you can raise and lower the seat. And the case with my wifes new car, the steering wheel telescopes in and out.

I have investigated hundreds of crashes with air bags being deployed over the years. The air bag at times causes the injuries ... not the crash. If you sit real close to the steering wheel (like my 82 year old mother) you can really get blasted in the face or chest.

My wife is short legged. The steering wheel is up against her when driving. She almost always drives with both hands on the wheel at somewhere around 10/2.

I came across an accident that had just happened. The girl driving was ok, except the huge bruise and egg on her wrist where the air back knocked it into the side window. I was impressed at how fast it went black and blue.

A question to the OP, how bad was the crash? Did you have your seatbelt on? If it was a bad crash you slamming into the seatbelt and airbag may have very violent. If the wreck was not your fault, ask for pain and suffering money. I was rear ended once and was surprised how messed up I was. Not a lot of pain it just felt like my head would fall off when I got out of bed or did something like a sit-up. Don’t be afraid to go back to the doc.
