There was a public comment period that expired in late spring (I think). Anyone heard anything yet? I just bought a new fireplace to install in our future home just in case...

Wasn't that a 20 year old story? One of those internet rumors that just won't die? The EPA put wood burning appliance restrictions in place years ago.

There isn't anything stopping you from building your own, is there? Does it just stop/restrict manufacturers?

Wood burning is on it's last legs around here... there has been a media campaign for so long that kids will scold parents for heating with wood.

My understanding is California and specifically the various Air Management Districts are much stricter than EPA...

The home my brother bought has a permitted free standing wood stove used for primary heat... he had a real hard time finding homeowner's insurance with the wood stove cited as the reason...

Just manufacturers, but without that UL listing, your screwed in case of a fire.... I don't believe you could get your insurance to pay....

The EPA did put the rules out and those rules go into effect in 2015 or 2016 though the FINAL rule writing is not done/released that I know of yet. Like anything the EPA has done in last 10 years not much in real scientific basis for it other than expanding their power base and doing as they say.

Some of their latest steps are to grab the same power the IRS has with ability to lever fines and confiscate/steal $ out of your bank account WITHOUT judicial processes. They WILL appoint one of their own people to act as the Judge and Jury during the fining process. Oh and by the way they will be giving themselves bonuses by seizing assets of people they deem to be in violation of NO LAW but of their rules.

Standby, here in the great Peoples Socialist Party (Democrat Base) controlled area of Puget Sound are talking very strongly to outlaw all wood burning of any type or for any or purpose, no grandfathering. I suppose the Fire Departments will have their own armed police powers. Burning of land clearing debris is already outlawed and most incorporated cities have banned all outdoor burning. The wood recyclers used to take the stuff for free, but are now so loaded up with stuff with no market they charge same as land fills. There has been a proliferation of companies that chip and grind the wood waste, including stumps on sited to avoid all the hauling and disposal costs. Good business here if you have $1M to invest in equipment and start-up.

Land development is becoming extinct as the average buyer cannot afford the prices caused by all the Greenie Laws, rules, and bureaucratic interpretations. All these rich Greenies will soon have their wide open spaces as their own playgrounds without being bothered by us common folks as the rest of us have left or become homeless.
