Anybody ever put in a shallow well?

hey all....
b21nut, give NE Water wells a call - they're in hudson, nh (i think its hudson). they've helped me a few times w/ my wells... be careful diggin your own, i got hurt pretty badly last summer diggin through ledge... nice new england soil! i'll try and look up the number for ya later--- wit the kids tonight

Say hello to the "People's republic of Taxachusetts". Everything here is double of anywhere in the country, with a few exceptions. At the two thousand the guy actually acted like he was doing me a favor and said I would have to wait several months. I guess everyone is too busy building those yuppie Mcmansions.

It will cost you 2 grand just to get a well fragged here. I hate to think of what a dug well would cost in central Ma. I have two hand dug wells up on our hill. It use to be a pasture for cattle. One is 25 feet deep and high on the hill. The other is about 15 feet deep. Both are big and have stone walls around them. The deep well feeds the shalllower well. Good luck trying to dig anything in the N.E. without hitting tons of rock.

Not to be devils advocate here but do you already have a well? If not do any neighbors have one? Is 10 feet or even 30 feet enough?

My neigbors are all down at 60 feet with water. I knew from that I would be too.

Just don't want you to drill to China the hard way is all.

( Buy a 3 or 4 foot "SAND POINT" from your plumbing supplier, and pound it down with a well pounder (See previously attached picture). If you have water at 4 feet below the surface, pound it down 8-10' and put a head valve on the top with a pump and let 'er rip.)

Thanks for the links and advice. This is a new concept to me and I was having difficulty visualising it. I was over-complicating the whole thing, but now I think I've got it.

I do have a well down about 175ft. But the water table here is only about 5ft down. Drilling a well professionally for human consumption is very different from what I am looking to do. I could connect to my house well however, I would have to trench minimum 48" down (frost line MA 42") about 400ft right thru my wifes garden, an arbor, and several other obstructions. Hence, its worth a shot to try the well point.

One of the posters of this thread mentioned using water to install the well point instead of a hammer. This is the way we do it here on the coast of North Carolina. We can put a well point in in about 30 minutes. We use well points to dry up certain areas before excavation. Matter of fact, I'm getting ready to install one at the house to run a sprinkler system.
