I have around a 55 hp 4 cyl diesel in a Waldon loader. Runs a Nippon Denso pump. The only markings I can find are on the oil fill cap and the same symbol is cast into the block. Anybody recognize this? I'd say Japanese but I really have no idea. I don't see any other nameplates, etc.

If you don't get an answer here, you could e-mail the photo to Waldon -- their technical staff should be able to help.

Thanks Steve, I'll check with Waldon next week. Just in case someone retrofitted this engine though hopefully I'll find out what it is. The injector pump does have this symbol on it as well. I guess Nippon Denso pretty much made everything so it doesn't mean much.

Toyota

I think it's a 2L and it looks like the timing belt broke since I can freely turn the nut for the injector pump shaft gear under the little pop-off cap :( This ought to be a fun repair. Hope the pistons didn't smash into the valves. I'm disappointed in learning diesels use timing belts too.

A friend once owned a Toyota diesel pickup. We worked on the engine several times and I recall thinking it was a well designed tough little goober, and not hard to service. I certainly hope you find that the case here.

Sorry to hear a belt over a chain though, let's hope they wouldn't do that to an interference engine with that much compression! Can't wait to hear the details.

I hate timing belts.

From what I can gather it almost certainly is an interference engine. I'm not even sure if it is possible to make it otherwise but I suppose anything is possible. I was running the engine at its full speed when apparently the belt broke. It stopped pretty fast but I don't recall hearing any bangs, scrapes, etc. that would indicate engine damage but I wasn't really paying too close attention as I obviously wasn't expecting this to happen. The previous owner stated he was operating the unit when the motor suddenly quit so I assumed it was the same problem. In his case, it turned out the pump got air in it and needed to be bled. After bleeding multiple times it became clear to me that this wasn't the problem again. The engine spins free with the starter, no unusual noises but I expect some sinister mechanical damage did occur. I may just opt for another replacement engine and it will probably be for one without a timing belt as I'd rather not have that maintenance headache lurking over me in the future. My prior experience with diesel equipment has been they are pretty much bullet-proof and although they may not run perfect and smoke more than a gas engine, they could always be counted on to at least run well enough to operate what they are driving. Adding a timing belt in the mix severely affects this notion of reliability in my opinion especially since most of my equipment tends to be older where belt degradation from age and exposure to leaks more than use becomes an issue.

Are you going to replace the belt, or having it done? It would be a real pity to replace an entire engine for a timing belt. If you can spin the engine, you should be able to do a compression check (leak down test is better) and see if you have anything bent and leaking.

You're looking at what, 4 hours and a $40.00 belt? You can probably find the procedure on the web if you know the class and size of the engine, because you're obviously going to have to retime it.

Diesel fan here, gimme a diesel over a gasser anytime, and yes, that is a 97 Dodge Cummins under my behind!

Good luck and let us know.
