As some of you know, my 6000 is an '02 model. Battery is still OK, and it starts on the first crankover, but I'm thinkin' that it probably won't make it thru next winter. Anyone get a new batter yet, or is mine the oldest 00 series tractor here???Also for the Mahindra dealers, what's the the series requirement (battery series) that I'll need to replace it this fall?? I put a new battery on my 5005 last year. Can't remember what I replaced it with, but it was just a tad taller and I had to modify the tie down brackets.

My battery in 4110 was replaced within the first 100 hrs under warranty for a bad cell. The dealer ran down to the local auto parts and came back with something that dropped right in without changes to the hold down.

I replaced the battery in my 04 2615HST in January this year. It started cranking very slow in cold weather. I bought the replacement at Advance Auto. Same case size as original but more CCA.

When the new battery started showing the same symptoms of the original a couple months later I checked further and found 2 of 3 glow plugs had failed. I replaced all three in April this year.
Only one plug was working. The #2 plug had a dead short and #3 had an open circuit, no resistance with an ohmmeter at all.
I'm sure the shorted one did not help the battery since it was draining 12V to ground every time the key was turned on.

George this is interesting. Can you tell me how you check the glow plugs? Do you put the tester inline with the plug? My tractor doesn't do this but I'd like to know how this is tested. Thanks!

Tim,
My 2615 has 3 glow plugs. The plugs have a thin steel bar that is under the nut on each one that connects them all together. They are fed 12V from a single feed wire that comes from the timer circuit when the key is turned on. To check them you must unhook the 12V feed wire and remove the bar that connects them all together, then resistance can be checked on each from the connection point to engine ground. Or you can pull each one individually and measure resistance from the top connection point to the part of the plug that screws into the engine. See below. Plug 1 has resistance and is good. Plug 2 has no resistance and is an open circuit. The third one I had (not pictured) was shorted and showed 0 (zero) on the resistance scale.

Got one at Napa for my 6000 this week for $74.95. It seems to be exactly the same as the old one. I've got to kick that habit of leaving the key on.

JWC, thanks for the update. I'm thinkin' about an Optima jell cell as getting to the battery (as you are probably painfully aware) is not the easiest on the 6000. Did you have a tough time getting it out??BobG in Va

Not too bad! Loosen the wingnuts and pull the grill out, take out the 4 bolts that hold the air filter retainer and horn in, set those two out, loosen the battery hold down and straight up and out. Of course after taking off the ends, which I replaced. Less than 5 minute job.

I think that reading on the second one is infinite resistance (not too sure of your ohn meter). With infinite resistance the device will pull no current. Check the manual for your meter and see what it says for open circuit or inifinte resistance. Or just pull the leads off of the glow plug and see if it shows the same display. The glow plug is bad either way.
