I see a hole in the ice time for a swim. Every year I use to go out in Jan chop a hole in the ice and jump in. It wasn't all that bad, scraping my body on the ice didn't even hurt, atleast not until I started to thaw out  I have pictures of my son swimming while there was still 2' of snow on the ground{march I believe}. I asked how the water was and with pruple lips he said "gggggg r r r eat" , and stayed it for for awhile.

Nice pics BlueRiver. Is it unusual for your pond/tank to freeze over?

20_20: You can have my turn in the icy water  I've never understood how people can do that. They have Polar Bear clubs around here that run in the ocean or take a quick dip in a lake every year around New Years time. No thanks. :)
Dave.

Dave ... I have had like maybe 1/4" of a slush type of ice ... first time we chopped holes. Was worried the animals where going to venture out on it, hit 40 yesterday and woke to 37 ... no more frozen pond.

Thanks. I wonder sometimes about animals 'ice sense'. Not uncommon for deer and moose to go through ice around here. Last winter a deer went across our pond and left 6"-8" deep footprints in the slush. I was surprised it made it across and glad I didn't have to look at a dead deer sticking out of the ice  You were probably right to worry about the horses.

Hopefully you won't be chopping holes again.
Dave.

This was my neighbors Longhorn yesterday ... we decided to just leave him and the neighbor would keep an eye on him. He got off by himself.
