Australia Fires Part 2

Looking out of my window visibilty is about 100m, also going to be hot today and I have to go and pick up a jockey wheel for our horse float, 120km round trip for a $10 item:mad:
Girlchild needs to be more observant when towing and raise the $%^@%$ thing!
This is the third one she has busted.
Perhaps you need to put on a electric powered jack so that it is easier for her to crank it up all the way :D

I don't know why the previous thread was locked? :confused3: Find it hard to believe TBN would lock a thread because a post contained a link to help save animals. :bear: Perhaps a moderator will post an explanation?
As I recall, it was locked because it went into politics.

I saw on the news this morning that Japanese firefighters have arrived to assist/relieve... they came via a JSDF Hercules.

That's one looooong flight in a Herc. :)

We had another fire about 5km from us on French Island, fortunately there is about 2km of water that separates us, burnt out about 100hectares (about 250 acres) before being brought under control with fire bombers and fire brigades that had to be ferried across.
The Island is low scrub and a few trees, big Koala population which seemed to have escaped unscathed, cause was a lightning strike.
The smoke at our place was horrific, thick and choking but no risk of jumping the wet firebreak, being low scrub and grass embers were not a major factor.
French Island is only accessible by boat and does not have a large population, used to be a prison farm many years ago and is now a National Park for the most part.
Has a small general store and a handful of residents, few tourists at weekends not that there is a lot to see.
Big storms yesterday and today with a lot of hail in parts, the major fire fronts are now getting the rain and one cow cocky (farmer) was caught dancing naked in his paddocks, poor bugger was on TV.

So it's getting better? I was wondering about the Koalas, such a great animal, all of your animals are going thru this.

I recently listened to a short presentation (on line) by a fellow named Tony Heller. Never heard of him prior.

He showed that much more severe and extensive fires have happened in Australia in not so distant past years. Like 1937 or so.

The point was made that fuel load is the entire story. Large fires can not become the "New Normal", there will be insufficient fuel for quite some time.

I love the irony of putting North American firefighters on planes to travel half way around the world to fight forest fires that are believed to be the cause to Global warming. Are there no Countries a little closer willing to help out or is it just an ill thought out virtue signalling exercise?

We've had rural firefighters over there for some time now and more are going every week. The Air Force is taking supplies and in the last couple of days a plane taking military personnel went via Fiji am picked up a contingent from there. There are also nurses and Vets over there helping out in the veterinary clinics with the burned and displaced animals.
I have a friend who lives at Bateman Bay which was severely affected. She said there is no groceries, no fuel, no electricity and they'e not letting anyone in or out. She's back over here staying with her daughters until she can go home.
