Hello all...am getting a 3pt quick hitch for my L2900. Am also considering fabbing up some kind of ballast box.
My question is - does it make much of a difference if the ballast box is hooked up via the quick hitch (which means it hangs out a bit further out back), or is it more effective if it's tucked in tighter behind the tractor?

Thanks..

Actually, it is more effective as a counter balance if it does hang out a bit further back.

The closer the counter weight is located to the rear axle, the less weight it will take off the front axle.

Absolutely QH compatible IMHO. :2cents:
It's going to come on and off a lot. Make everything you own QH compatible and live the good life.

Oldoak has it right. "a bit further back", not like using an implement to counterbalance.

Luke'sScreenName also has it right. If you have a flat (cement) floor to store your implements, putting them on wheeled pallets makes switching implements around (front & back) a lot easier too.

Stacking bales or bags of heavy stuff on the very back of my 5' rotary cutter was by far the best ballast I ever had on y L3200. Better than a 60 gallon compressor tank filled with brake drums, cement & QH compatible mount points. The tank is probalby heavier, but the weight WAY back on the rotary cutter nearly pulled the front off the ground on it's own just do to the leverage that far back.

Ballast close will increase traction a bit. Ballast a ways back will add traction on the rear & lighten the front.

I built a receiver hitch into my ballast box, and if I were to do it over again, I would built is with the receiver lower in the box. it is too high for my simple garden wagon. If I lower the 3-point, it gets the hitch closer to where it needs to be, but then there is a high likelihood of bottoming out on rough ground out in the timber where I use this the most. Plan your hitch height carefully.

Use both, then you get the added leverage as well as the weight of the QH.

I agree. I pick up, use, set back down my ballast without leaving the seat. Would have little use for any other type.
