Battery Dead after 5 years!

In an auto, 5 years from an oem battery would set a new Olympic record.

My 99 Ford E150 battery lasted 10 years of heavy abuse! My TC24DA battery is still going strong from 2004 and I never charge/tend it.

When I was young, I waited until my batteries died. Now I'm older, and I realize $75 every five years is a small price to pay to avoid a problem. Especially here up North, when of course it's going to happen when it's -25ºF or worse, and when you're trying to get to someplace important. I put in new batteries every five years whether they need it or not.

I could not agree more. The only award for having the longest lasting battery is getting stranded. :D

nah it doesn't go from 100% to 0% overnight. you can tell when things start going south, then you better replace it before winter!

My battery didn't go dead overnight. It started to get less and less starting power and I would have to put it on the battery charger if I didn't run it for a couple of weeks. Like several of you said, it isn't worth waiting till its completely dead. Diesel engines take a good bit of power to start when its near 0 degrees F! If it was a gas tractor or car, you might be able to get away with a semi-dead battery by parking it on a hill and coasting it down and poping the clutch. My tractor is inside a pole building and I have never heard of starting a diesel by coasting it down a hill. A good strong battery is what you need. Since I got my new battery, my tractor starts right up regardless of the temperture.

Some cars will give you a hint.

Like, the memory for all your programed radio stations will be lost after starting the engine. This is you car sending you a warning.

My 2000 Nh 1920 still has the original battery. It has 550 hours and sits uncovered outside. I did install the block heater a couple of years ago but used it for the first time this winter. I also use Rotella synthetic oil in it. Bill C
