Battey Tenders do they discharge during power outages?

I am in the process of purchasing a couple of these, and a thought came to mind, during a power outage, do they discharge?

Do they put a voltage back into the line?

They stop operating like anything else needing power to operate. The battery that it (or they, as I have 7 in my garage) is attached to, remains in tact. Once the power returns, the Tender will reacquaint itself with the battery and return the battery to its required charge. These are great gadgets for a peace of mind. I keep my batteries plugged into a Tender year-round.

One thing I will suggest is to buy the inexpensive 25' extension cord for each Tender. I use mine to hang overhead, thus no requirement to step under or over a cord that may otherwise be routed across a walkway.

I think you are asking if the tender will discharge the battery if it is not plugged in. No, diodes in the tender's circuit will prevent the higher voltage of the battery from discharging into the zero volts of the tender.

Yep, they have blocking diodes in them which allow current to flow to the battery (charge) but block current from flowing away (discharge), when there is no power source for the charger.

My two (about six years old) say to unplug from battery if unplugged from wall, as battery will keep indicator light on. The LED is pretty low draw but it is a little.

I'm thinking these are something I should be adding to my winter storage plans.

Is there any difference between a "battery tender" and the small chargers used with motorcycle batteries? (like any shut off?)

That is my question also. Is, or what is the difference between a "battery tender" and low amp (10-2amp?) "trickle charger" ?

I have looked at several models of chargers in several stores, and can't tell the difference. If there is any.

Or is there something I'm just not getting about this ?

I have my JD 855 diesel block heater on a timer, that runs for a couple hours before the usually time I use it. Has not caused a problem, but I don't want a battery to be the cause of any trouble. If a tender, or trickle charger can be as little as $6.oo and produce the results I want, it's worth it.
