I found a hole on the bottom of the bearing cover on the non gear side of this RS1400 yanmar tiller. It was full of dirt and the bearing needs to be replaced. I can't seem to get the bearing out used PB Blaster on it for days and there is not enough space to get a gear puller under the outer race. Anyone done this and have any tricks? Do i have to pull the whole axle out?

Thanks
Robert

I would try using a Gear or Bearing puller that you can reverse the Arms so they grab out instead of in. I have a set of Harbor Frieght EL-CHEAPO'S that will Reverse and in 3 differnt sizes. I believe I gave 20 Bucks for the set. ;)

I rented a set from Advance Auto but even the smallest set reversed was too large.... Casey did you use the Harbor Freight set to remove the bearing cause if so i will go get a set.

I have an RS1300 tiller which I expect is very similar to yours. Having looked at the bearing housing you are speaking of I have an idea if it is like mine. There are three larger bolts that hold that little bearing housing to the tiller frame. If you removed those three bolts I believe your shaft could drop beneath that frame enough to allow putting a puller on the back side of the little bearing housing. You could pull housing, bearing and all I'm assuming you removed a snap ring or lock nut on the shaft when you removed the outer bearing housing cover. Might even be able to get 2 pry bars in between tines and housing to pry it off. May not be like the rs1300 but might look at the possibility.

Thank goodness I was able to clean mine up since I caught it. Thanks to Member California making a post of it :D. But to answer your guestion yes my smallest puller will fit no doubt but I was able to clean it up while it was still in it. Just a rag and parts cleaner and blew it out with a compresser. Okay don't laugh I'm a tight wad but just repacked it with my EL CHEAPO grease packer from again HF. It worked but PMO since I just bought it and new I better look from all the other Dumb A_ _ things that was wrong even the PTO shaft was wrong the RS1400 is the tiller made for a YM 2000 and it came from one of the Largest co. in the US. :ashamed:

If your bearig is bad than don.t worry about tearing it up any more just remove a couple of ball bearings and your puller should fit. So while I have these old picks out. Check out just how bad the wrong shaft was. I had to remove so much and had to cut out and weld it back together. and if you look hard enough you can see I even had to cut off the female side of the shaft. They finaly gave me another Shaft it just took them 2 Wks. and I got tired of weighting for it and thats how I was able to catch the bearing also.

Thanks Winston and Casey ...I will try removing a few ball bearings to get some room and try the puller i rented otherwise I can see removing the 3 bolts would give me space ..I will let you know what happens.

Taking off the 3 bolts worked because the bearing housing could spin around and i could bang the housing and bearing off the shaft. This still left the problem of the bearing in the housing but I was able to get the inner race out after digging out the bearing retainer. I had to take the bearing housing to a machine shop and they welded a bar to the outer bearing collar and put it on a press and pushed it out. Had to go to a bearing house for the replacement and got a sealed SKF bearing for $38 that will out live me. The tiller is back together and runs great. Now all i have left is making the rear skirt (got the metal today) and I am done. I have under $600 into the tiller including the $300 I pain for it so I still feel like i got a great deal. Thanks for all the help guys!! Yanmar people are great ...the guy I got the steel gave it to me free because he used to own a Yanmar and loved the tractor.

Great RMully. That was one of the reasons and Glad of it for sure now of checking mine. Thanks again Cal. I still have 75$ more in mine some repair work and a road trip to AL. My opiniun is plain neglect from the rice patty's but like you caught it all before it wasn't worth fixing it. Prob.out last me also now.
