I have a brand new stump grinder -- a Shaver SC25 model. I was using it for the first time this morning. On my sixth stump, it stalled my tractor when a chunk of wood got jammed between the grinding wheel and it's casing -- at the very back. I tried to engage the PTO and it stalled again. What's the best way to remove the jam without damaging the grinder? Does this happen often -- or is it just beginners luck?

Can you unhook the pto shaft and turn it backwards?

Another idea is can you disengage the pto and get a pry bar or board against the grinding wheel and turn it backwards but be careful you don't tear something up.

It will not budge. Looks like I will have to disassemble and remove the cutting wheel. The object is a big wood chunk and it is in there as far as possible. My stump grinding is off to a slow start.

Can you burn the wood chunk out? Just thinking out loud. Or get it wet and spongy.

Can you get a wood chisel at the wood chunk and shave or slice it into pieces? I have successfully freed my wood chipper that way.

Every time I've seen this thread title today, I first think it says:

Stump Grinder Jammed with Wood Chuck

:D

I guess I've seen "wood chuck" hundreds of times more than I've seen "wood chunk."

Drill? Sawsall? Big pry bar? Angle grinder?

Lure it out with clover? :)

Can't be that big of a problem. There has to be a shield or an open space to cut a relief to free the blade. More horsepower would cure this from happening.

When I get this cleared up -- I probably will run into a wood chuck!

No chance getting a tool in there to chisel or shave the object. I think burning it might be the best approach if I can find a propane nozzle that's 18 inches long, or so. Any chance this will generate enough heat to damage the cutting wheel or teeth?

If it was me- I'd be taking the blade out already. This way I can inspect for other damage while blade is off and check to see if there is any greasing or maintenance I could do.
