I live in North Carolina and am wondering when is the best time of year to bushhog my trails, if the goal is to only do it once or twice a year?

Coyote:

I'll take a stabe at this one.....how about ahhhhh ummmm ...when they need it?????????. Well, do I win anything for answering it right.

Coyote you got some "splanning" to do, there's got to be more to this story. Why does it matter if you mow trails twice a year or 5 time a year??? I don't get it.

Best time would be after the most growth. I'm not sure in your area but around here that would be in the middle to the end of June.

I like to do it a day or two after it rains, to keep the dust down. If I brush hug when it hasn't rained for a few weeks I can't see where I'm going for all the dust.

When its not 95 degrees like I am going to be doing Saturday on our deer land. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

...When there is no GREEN in the area...

no leaves, no buds, hibernate period... just branches...

Now you can see what lies ahead, and much easier cutting (less hp) used... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thats what I have been planing John. Nice cool/cold late fall, early winter day. Leaves gone, bee's dead, can see what you are doing. Of corse this is for the heavy brush cutting. The late weight feild stuff woud need to be kept up, but for the thick, old grouth, I think it would be better.

I know it sounds like a crazy question, but I'm trying to catch it like cowboydoc said, after the most growth, and something that may last until fall. Why? Because I'm talking about 4-5 MILES! Thanks.

If you want to use those trails for walking, etc. I'd say you need to cut them at least 3 times -- end of May, end of July and then mid-October.

Sorry, I'm with Whiskey on this one. If the brush makes the trail unpassable, it is no longer a trail /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

You have to do it when needed and that varies a lot between locations. We have several miles of trails in the fall, winter and early spring. We have no passable trails from about late May to when I brushhog it again in the fall after the first hard freeze that kills most of the green vegitation. I find that time of year easier on my allergies as well.
