At least the sound of this thing running means I'm making money.... Buildup/remachining castings is about the most profitable work I do
That's the sound of wings flapping on your twenty dollar bills migrating south...

Re: Big Barn痴 Retirement Farm Shop

I got a few pics last night with a glaring flashlight.

Its features are AC/CC, DC/CC (constant current), and HF for scratch-start TIG.

It's good for 150a w/50% duty cycle in most modes. (80a/50% TIG)

It's already a 1Ph unit but we'll still have to check internally that it's set for 220v vs 440v, like when we put a cord on it.

Not bad for free .. so far. We have my Everlast to fall back on.

With high frequency you don't need to scratch start TIG. Actually, the purpose of HF is so you don't have to scratch start. But you will need a pedal or button to start/stop the current. HF kicks in only for a short second when you press the button/pedal to start the connection. It then turns off and runs without HF until you disconnect and start a new connection. I will not get a TIG welder without HF, as scratch-starting will contaminate your tungsten. Contaminated tungstens are a pain to use if you're dealing with low current welds. I used to weld 3/16" brake lines together in a T shape for a vacuum manifold in one of my previous jobs. When the tungsten would get contaminated the arc would go anywhere but where I wanted it to go. With the low current needed I had to keep the tip close to the puddle and occasionally would touch it. I kept about a dozen tungstens in a cup next to my work so I wouldn't need to get up to sharpen them each time. I also had to run with just a button because my employer was too cheap to get me a pedal.

I wonder if "Econo Twin" was the predecessor to "Econo TIG" or if they were made concurrently. I've never seen the Econo Twin, only Econo TIG. From what I understand (based on foggy memory of the research I did) the Econo TIG was an okay (but not great) unit, but parts have been discontinued. I was looking at an Econo TIG at a decent price, but if it cannot be fixed when it breaks it's a gamble.

I'd say you got the perfect price on it. If you plan on running TIG get yourself a button or pedal. If you don't have a button/pedal you will need to leave the HF off.

Re: Big Barn痴 Retirement Farm Shop

Thanks for the explain. I sharpened 5/32" & 3/16" red stripe* electrodes for >two years for the torque converter plant and my hands still glow in the dark. * 2% thoriated. When they came in contaminated you could just tap them like a drumstick and the brittle, contaminated tip would shatter off.

Earlier, in my 3 mos of apprentice time in the weld dept our best TIG welder handed me a pair of thick, stiff gauntlets and a job half the size of my thumb to scratch start on. He said 'leave the pedal where it is' and walked away. I spent more time cleaning up the electrode's tip than I did cooking the parts to glow like light bulbs.

Meanwhile, I bought blue stripe* electrodes for my MTS-251s Everlast, but can't get into a welding class at MCC down in Flint. There won't be any for a while. :( * 2% lanthanated.

I have five stick welders and two MIGs now and don't need another one for my hack work until I get some lesson and days/weeks/months more practice. This one could be hard to fine a home for. One skilled/pro welder in our group, and like the the rest of he's pretty much all MIG.

btw, I bot a HF-start plasma cutter, and found how easily consumables/tips can be melted right off the torch when working in position 3.

So I知 talking to by buddy Bob this morning and I guess I mentioned that the Miller welder I got might only need the connections cleaned up and perhaps the worst case scenario, a new fan.

Anyhow a few hours later he texts me to open the gate as he is on his way over. Thought he may have been bringing coffee.

He dropped this off.....LOL

Maybe dnw could use it for his wood shop.

I have a heavy duty 3 phase VFD for it. You could adjust the amount of blow or suck needed.

I have no use for this blower. The new price for it without the skid mount and switch is $11k Cdn

I will just help my friend to sell it

If you can weld with oxy/acetylene, TIG is very similar. Set the dial for your max heat, and use the pedal as a throttle. I've only used red and green tungstens. 95% of my welding was on plain carbon steel. Run DCEN for almost all welding as opposed to arc welding which is typically DCEP. Aluminum would be AC, and you end up with a ball on the end of the tungsten if you run AC (or DCEP by mistake). One nice thing about TIG is you can puddle without adding filler or limited filler. Great for tacking or getting flush butt joints. Also good for getting more penetration prior to filling.

Unfortunately I don't have TIG right now. I had to chose between TIG and MIG and I picked a MIG for now. I'd love to have a TIG, but it's just not in the budget with all the work that needs to get done on the house. I had to go with what I would use the most on the farm and trying to do heavy welding with TIG is tedious and can get hot on the gloves.

Not exactly in the same league but. I finally installed this auction find a few weeks ago.
7 1/2 HP 2500 CFM 10.5 of static pressure. Interior piping comming soon, more than enough Moxie for a one man wood shop
