Tractor
Ford 1710
I have a Ford 1710 that I would like to outfit with a boom mower (rotary). The state used to mow the banks here but haven't been up to the job for about 3 years now, the brush is getting close to heaven. Anyone know of a boom mower that will fit this tractor? I've been searching the net but have not found anything small enough.
Thanks...G

I think you will find that the 1710 is just too smal both in hp and weight to handle a boom mower. I looked at Boom Mowers for my 2120 (quite a bit bigger than a 1710) a couple of years back and found that there were booms for 2120 class machines.

They cost about $12,000 with a 4 foot cutter head.

I doubt the 1710 would have the hydraulic capacity to handle a boom mower. After you hung the counterweight you'd probably have to go pretty slow. Go find a used belt-drive 6-7' sickle mower, the 1710 will handle that just fine.

The tractor in the eBay ad looks almost identical to my 4200 (26 HP, 20 HP PTO), or maybe it's a the next size up 4300. That mower would make mowing the scary ditch as I call it easier.

Thanks Mike, I may end up going with a sickle bar.

Not sure how big of a tractor is but boom mowers are extremely heavy. I wish I could put one on my TC24. Anyway, there are some out there, but small. The cutting width won't be much. Here is one on ebay, that looks to be on some 40hpish JD. It has a 36 inch cutting width and weighs 1500lbs.

eBay: SUPER NICE JOHN DEERE 90 KNUCKLE BOOM FLAIL MOWER (item 260131185373 end time Jun-28-07 18:20:12 PDT)
Yea, I saw that JD unit on ebay, it needs more tractor than I currently have. dgl24087 had a good reference to VMC (vegitation managemnt equipment Co.). I am checking them out.
Thanks...G
