I am looking for a B and S Fuel Tank, OEM part #297257. I am even open to good used. This is an old 70's engine, but runs great. Gas Tank rusted through.

I have always found that most small engine shops have a graveyard full of spare parts from models that were deemed not worth fixing, the last time I needed a metal gas tank for a generator that is where I found mine when a new one couldn't be found.

Could you find a similar plastic tank and build some simple brackets to hold it near the original's place?

A quick search shows those with a pulsa-jet carb already installed for under $25.
Mower shop scrapyard and free off craigslist or FB could possibly net some results, although those are pretty old and have largely been cycled out of regular service.
