Broken NH 451 cutter bar(guards attach to this)

Does anybody know where to find used or aftermarket parts for a NH 451 mower? The dealer price is around $700.00 bucks for one of these parts.(cutter bar)

Depending on the break, a machine shop that also does welding might be able to put it back together like original. As for a used part, I'd consider subscribing to Lancaster Farming, www.lancasterfarming.com. They always have a section with about forty pages of ads, many of which are from used equipment dealers. Some of those sell parts.

Another source for parts, though not as good, is the ag equipment valuation guide put out by the folks who issue Equipment Hotline. I've seen used parts dealers ads in the first few pages of the guide. That's where I found the counterweights for my Ford.

How did it break.. broken when you got it? Going in the forward direction.. there's a break-away mechanism.. but not going backwards. A couple weeks ago the little arm that plunges the blades back & forth broke.. it had been welded before.. made of cast.. has 3 sets(double on one side) of roller bearings in it.. I bought a new one.. $140.. the piece is only 6 inches long. A Weldor should be able to fix it.. let us know how it works out.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but this is break-away mechanism related...
I got my 451 going and was cutting a ditch bank yesterday. High and thick johnson-grass. Couldn't cut with much ground speed as I was trying to watch the ground level and keep from digging in and cut low enough at the same time. The grass built up on the bar and several times tripped the break-away. I didn't stop soon enough once or disengage the pto, and when the bar swung back the fan belt drive pulley swung forward and cut my lift cable. Needless to say that stopped my cutting until I can replace it.
The only belt guard on my mower is small and at the wobblebox end of the belt. Later pictures of the mower in the manuals show a guard and plate going the length of the belt assembly. Does your mower have this type of guard and if so does it prevent the lift cable from contacting the belt drive pulley when the bar moves to the rear on break-away?

The mower is probably about 15 years old and has done a lot of cutting. When it first broke I welded it back and it lasted a little while but broke again at the same place right next to the end next to the tractor. I think I broke it backing up. If I can't find one I may just cut it off and make a 6 ft out of it. My dad also broke one a few years ago so it can be done fairly easy. (We found a junk one for $125.00 on the one he broke) Thanks for the replies.

Mine is the same way.. the 450 has a PTO hookup for a crimper on the main pulley.. no guards except the small one on the wobblebox end.

I was trying to cut a tangled field of dry ryegrass on friday.. the cows had got out the friday before trampled it.. the sickle mower kept getting the "grass buildups" on the bar. I didn't even get one pass done.. switched to bushhog.. I didn't need the fustration.. we had 76 rows of sweet corn to pick that weekend.. w/ 3 bushel from one row.. we ended up only picking 26 rows.
